Wanted: More books compatible with D&D 3.5

Utgardloki

Mongoose
I just bought the new 4E Dungeons and Dragons books from WOTC and, like a number of other people, am very disappointed in the results. A number of people feel that 4E is a step backwards from 3.5 in many ways, and I, at least, would rather spend money on more well-written books compatible with 3.5 than on the new books for 4E.

It's like my favorite restaurant decided they'd stop serving garden salad and broccoli soup, but now serve triple chocolate meltdown cake.

If Mongoose publishes any good 3.5-compatible books in the future, I, for one, will buy them.

With Mongoose planning to make more games with the Traveller system and with 4E release. I can't see that happening. To me it just would not make sense from a financial viewpoint for them to do so. A new version of D&D always imo tends to attract people more than an older one imo. It's brand new, it's flashy and it's the only one Wotc is planning to support. Another problem is in a couple of months a lot of the 3.5 books from Wotc will no doubt be out of print. To a new person to the hobby they may not want to invest in a dead edition.

No, I just don't see it.

The problem is that in general people want the newest of everything. Those of us who play OD&D (1974) and AD&D (1979) have been hoping for more product support for decades but few companies want to risk it because they don't anticipate enough return on their investment.

Maybe they won't turn to 4E right away, but given time people will slowly give up on the OOP version and drift over to the rules being supported by WotC. I don't like it either, but it is bound to happen because the leader in the industry tends to get to set the standard.

The one thing that 3.5 has going for it is that Paizo is producing a new Pathfinder RPG using those rules. If Pathfinder is a success, others may follow. If not, 3.5 will be as OOP as AD&D.

I think Matthew has plans for Mongoose's 3.X content.

Conan and B5 fans are probably hoping for that. Either that or they won't be getting new products(apart from B5 setting book for traveller but that's it).

Luckily there seems to be stuff coming for both of the lines so 3.5 books should be coming.

Isn't there a clause in the new 4th Edition GSL, that you can't produce D&D material using GSL and OGL at the same time? I think I have picked something like that up somewhere.

[GSL? GLS? You know what I mean ;)]

As far as I am aware it is only for the same things. So mongoose could not produce Wraith Recon for 3.5, but all of their 3.5 stuff they don't produce 4e books for they can carry on with.

To say I'm dissatisfied with 4ed is an under statement. :( I've played D&D Since I was 13. I'm 39. I've played every edition. I've actually taken my 4Ed books back to the shop and they're in the 2nd hand bin. In my opinion 4ed isn't RPG. It's a combat strategy game. like magic the gathering.

For those who miss real D&D and want a new workable system, those nice people at Troll lord games do Castles and Crusades, :D which is ten times closer to D&D than 4ed. It's OGL. Maybe Mongoose could do some C&C stuff?

Hve you given Pathfinder from Paizo a go?

Go and check out the free download of their beta version of the RPG :)

3.5 fans -

Check out our Conan stuff. Conan OGL is very much like 3.5 with a few switch ups here and there.

It might not be EXACTLY 3.5, but they are based in the same punchbowl, if you get me. :)
