Vor: The Maelstrom

Actually, we all took turns using the Pharon. I think the only real "issue" we had was that-I think it was a "Death Orb", or "Death Whisper" or something like that that the Priests could take and just kill entire units with a word. Pretty unforgiving. One minute you're on patrol lookin' for bad guys in bandages and the next minute you're dead. Just like that!

An Eldar army sounds kind of cool. I'm in the process of doing both a Strogg army (from Quake), as well as a Covenant army (Halo of course) to try and renew interest in wargaming in my area. I figure maye armies from those games could be just the trick!

Are you referring to the Purging? A Sphere of Black Energy - thats the ONLY thing that comes close to what you describe. The Priest still has to take a BRN test to use it, and still has to roll to Injure the target AND it costs 8 MP to use.

The only other Orb/Sphere are the Carrion Spheres, but the Priests can't have them and they only have an 8" range.

Yeah, I can't find my book, but I'm pretty sure it was the purging. Maybe we were playing it wrong, but it just seemed unstopable!

If you get it off, its awesome. But it just makes the Priest into a s**t magnet for indirect fire weapons Lol!

I did a little work on Vor.

Never got paid for it. When FASA was settling up I queried and they 'could find no record' of me contributing.

My name is on the game box, I think. Spelled wrong though.

Well, that totally sucks ass. You must pretty much hate fasa now...
It sucks when companies screw you over. I was promised the GW outrider program by a GW guy over here and it never materialised.

Just jumping in to say that Vor is a fantastically badass game. We played it quite a bit, doing battles between 40K chaos space marines, Warzone Bauhaus and Neo-soviets. Good stuff.

The campaign play, in particular, sets it off.

Its propably on my top 3 of great scifi mini's games (alongside Warzone and Stargrunt. Counting only commercial rules here)
I've been hunting for the army books, but the Union book seems elusive

i never played VOR but ive only heard praies for it.

interesting thing is the guy who did the growlers apparently sculpted the troll mauler for warmache/hordes

I'm a VOR fan, but even back then I saw its problems just as I saw them in SST.

VOR had a great fantastical scifi setting that, had Vor gone on for years longer, it would have a very solid background rivalling that of 40k in depth.

The armies were varied and pretty unique.

The rules needed work to me, they were slow and clunky, despite doing a good job of handling combat itself, it was easily bogged down.

The vehicle rules didn't work properly. Big battles were avoided because even between the experienced players because the normal combat rules just bogged down.

There were three seperate rolls needed in a normal attack to hurt something, and that's not counting any special abilities.

While I loved the MP system, it also bogged the game down.

The alternate activation scheme, while different, suffered from the problem where you couldn't pull off joint strikes as well as in other games where two units move at the same time.

All that said, I still have my Zykhee and my army books for Growlers and Shard. Once SST Evo comes out and if I find it to my liking, then I'll work on a VOR conversion.
