Von Neumann machines in the OTU

Why isn't there more automation at the higher Tech Levels.

Why doesn't the Imperium, or even (especially) smaller polities make use of Von Neumann machines to mine asteroid belts, process raw materials to make enough of themselves, then build something?

Are humans neither long-lived enough, or willing to start projects that won't reach fruition during a particular person's lifetime?

Seems like some of the MegaCorps or Bureaus would be willing to engage in long-term projects, especially ones with little initial outlay, and great potential long-term gain.

Nanotechnology and robotics are everywhere at high TLs in the Imperium, you just don't notice them since they are so much in the background and part of everyday existence.
Digital assistants, smart everything that can be smart, extensive automation and computer control, nanomanufacturing (note we do that now), makers, robots, synthetic beings, clones, memory downloads/uploads - they all exist in the OTU. Until you make them a plot point they are just there in the background.

I would recommend you read Marc Miller's Agent of the Imperium to find out how the OTU really works - oh, and you will also find out what happens to worlds where the machines try to take over, whether it is computer networks that become self aware or robotic invaders from outside the Imperium...
