Very New Player looking for advice

Hi everyone

Trying to convince my wife that B5 makes for a good Christmas present. Used to paly B5 wars a long time ago and just recently discovered this game and site. I have some questions and hope some one has the time and patience to respond.

Game

Looks like an advance version of Battle Fleet Gothic. How does it “feel” when playing? Fun? Balanced? Most importantly does it have the right feel fro the B5 universe?

Races

I am a Centauri fan from way back and will certainly buy them as my main race. Does the game portray them well? How do they feel to play? Have a particular playing style? I love the Vorchan, provides a real hunter killer feel.

The other two races I like are Narn and EA. The omega and the starfury are beautiful looking ships, problem is most of the others look fairly average. Narn of course have interesting looking ships and a good looking paint scheme. I understand these two races are similar in some ways, only Narn tend toward stronger hulls and EA tend to more fighters.

Models

Do the started packs provide good value? I suspect there is not enough fighters in most packs. Does any one use the fighters from the B5 wars game, larger single models? It might be the pics but the fighter stands look kind of , well, awfull.

Any one have any general advise they would like to share?

All I need now is buy some models, paint them and look for opponents.

My Dear Good Friend - come join the Great and Powerful Centauri Republic in makijg the Galaxy safe for us and lesser races fortunate enough to be blessed with our patronage.

The Centauri fleet is great - choice in everything

First the Maximus - its Fantastic and a must in most fleets (but I may be slightly bias)

want a super fast ship but yet still agile and with guns to make the Volrons go greener with envy - we have e'm in spades

Demos, Liati, Vorchan
Want heavywieght brawlers - plenty of em - slow but steady and yep massive guns

Want to play it sly and stealthy - well take some Dargans (complete with the best fighter in the game - which is also stealthy) and Corvans

The Centauri - your last best hope for blowing the living S**t out of you opponent :D (except maybe the Gaim :) )

re the Game - if you played and enjoy BFG you will pick this up with no trouble - its fast and fun - usually :)

re models - the boxes are good value but limit your choice - I prefer to collect the specific models I want- but try and play with proxy ships / counters first to get an idea what you like - Eldar make great Minbar! Imperials are Ok for EA and maybe Tau for Centauri - there are some counters in the rule book - but only B/w

The Centauri are a great fleet now, pretty close to what we see on screen. A good selection of ships at most levels, only one at war and armageddon but that's better than some races get. Three fighters to pick from, a great interceptor, a good multi-role fighter and a good fighter/bomber. Some people reckon a couple of Centauri ships are broken, too powerful, but I'm not convinced, and they can be avoided easily. Centauri make a great starter fleet, tactical but with good choice of units and styles.

Welcome to the glorious Centauri Republic. We're taking the galaxy back, we hope you'll help us.

Thanks guys. I have just noticed you can purchase the rules online as pdf, so I am printing them off now. Just need to tell my wife

Do they make enough model types for the game. ie, are there gaps in the model series?

What about B5 Fllet action? Can you still purchase their models?

The game uses most of the old B5 wars minis and some of the Fleet Action minis, such as the fighters. On top of that Mongoose has made brand new minatures.

I think they are still selling old Fleet Action Minis at the old Agent of Gaming website.

Page 3 of the rule book specifically states that AoG B5 Wars and Fleet Action mini's can be used freely in A Call to Arms.
There are a few ships which don't have models available yet, but I think they're mostly high level ships that don't see a lot of use. The only two I can think of off the top of my head are the Brivoki and the Neroon, both of which are Armageddon priority ships.
