VaS Terrain?

What are you guys using for a playing surface and should there be any islands/reefs/atolls, etc. at this scale?
Check the preview, one of the scenarios includes a chunk of land.

The presence of land often is a decisive factor in games involving one of my colleagues - he inevitably manages to put one of his war canoes on the putty if there is any hint of it about!

There are no rules covering the effects of land as such, but its effects should be relatively easy to include. A possible expansion could cover this i more detail I guess.

For a decent sea suface check out your local DIY store ant the vinyl floor tiles, bet you can find a dblu/grey mottled effect set of tiles that will give you a good effect on an avaerage sixe table for about £25

You may have seen them already, but I made up some test maps for VAS and put them in this thread :)

Some scenarios should actually mandate the placement of islands and such. I'll be making up some Pacific islands to use with the game. Wake comes to mind, and a must is the many engagements between Guadalcanal, Savo Island and Florida/Tulagi. The area between these had a nickname- Ironbottom Sound , for the ships lost there. Warhips moving through these waters detected on sonar the ships that were lost during previous battles, and thus the name given to the area of water. Every type of ship from PT boats (MTBs) up through and including battleships had been lost here and litters the bottom. I plan an article sometime early next year possibly in S&P for making islands. It should be fun.

Would something like this be appropriate for VaS?

I see terrain as a main play in many scenarios. Certainly for Pacific campaings, small Islands, land based air attacks on shipping, tropical reefs in places they are not supposed to be etc. For Europe what about big mother German Krupp shore batteries pounding away at shipping. Not to mention fictional stuff like the Guns of Navarone. Any official word?

I think they could be used, but they might be more suited for use as a coral atoll for grounding hazards (muahahaha). I plan to make some much larger terrain models, but that's only because I want Guadancanal modelled. It's 90 miles long, so some abstraction might be necessary. But as a simple answer, sure. Those Pirates island sets could work for use with VaS.

Uncle Mike (Seen over in the Gangs of Mega-City One forum) mads islands and whatnot for Pirates and the look great next to the ships. Pretty much the same scale.if you use 1:2400
