very cool, very meoldramatic, very epic, and yes, Valhalla awaits if you fail.

I love this--but sadly my players don't. I'd love to play metal during my games. I also like Rhapsody of Fire. Last game I tried a last time and they said "please stop"

Amon Amarth are one of my favourite bands. Some other awesome songs for battle are 'Gods of War', and 'Cry of the Black Birds'.

Saw both Finntroll and Amon Amarth live in concert just last week. I was a bit under the weather when Finntroll played, but Amon Amarth were grrrreat.

Other outstanding Viking Metal bands to enjoy:

Ensiferum
Falkenbach
Månegarm
Moonsorrow
No Man's Land
Thyrfing
Turisas
Týr

Also check out the Dutch pagan metal band Heidevolk.

On the more folky-metal side, try Lumsk (Norway) and Odroerir (Germany).

And we often let music run in the background; either some movie score (like Conan or 13th Warrior), or metal like these bands or similar.

There is also Sirenia which would fit in this category.

However I wonder whether metal gives an appropriate mood for an RPG session

Depends on the mood the GM sets.

Ever play Cyberpunk? It's practically a requirement.
