My goal was to find a quick and simple way to identify the ballpark price of items that cannot be easily compared to any existing Traveller items.
For example, a character wants to buy an airship (like the Goodyear Blimp), a snowmobile and a violin. How much do they cost?
By assuming that the Credit is at least in the same scale as the Dollar/Pound/Euro, I can at least ballpark the prices at airship = Millions of Credits, Snowmobiles = Thousands of Credits and Violins = Hundreds of Credits.
If the Credit is actually closer to a day's wages, then airship = Tens of thousands of Credits, Snowmobiles = Tens of Credits and Violins = less than 10 Credits.
The concensus seems to fall around 1 Credit = 1 to 5 Dollar/Pound/Euro, so as a quick check on prices, they should have the same number of digits as in the real world.
It gives the Referee a place to start from when setting a price for an unlisted item.
