USMC vs MI vs ARACHNIDS

and those funny wiggles mean exacly what?

as far as i underst6and, you'r saying that the idea of high-power batteries some 200 yrs from now is fantasy.given the wierd shit we'v seen in the last century(men flying? )i'd say it's entirely plausible.

And I think it's not plausible becouse there are no (good) theories how it would work. And I can't imagine how world with man-portable railgun would look like.
"I don't know what will be used in IIIWW but in the 4'th the rocks will be thrown"

what the?
the theorys for fusion and railguns are all there!!!
the latter even work already!!!!!

so what the heck are you talking about?

I think that the point Kenrick is making is that in the sci-fi genre there is science fiction and then there is science fantasy.

Science fiction is less forgiving from a tech point of view and most of the concepts can be rationalized from today's understanding of technology.

Science fantasy is the opposite and often these advanced pieces of technology that can not be rationalized in any way from a technological stand point.

Now IMO the most important aspect of all of this is the basic idea that this is fiction which is defined as "storytelling of imagined events" by Wikipedia. This makes the debate about the practical use of railguns as a hand held weapon seem, for lack of a better word, silly. The entire idea is to dream up new bits of hi-tech gadgets, not provide the technical specifications so that the US government can go out and equip all of our troops with it tomorrow. Just my 2.5 cents.

And to think that this whole topic actually started with a question of who would win in a fight between the Battlefield: Evolution USMC (set roughly ten years from now) and bugs...

man-portable

So what?
Once you can build them in big, soon you gonna be able to build them portable. It's just a question of time.
In the 1950s they probably thought there would never be a way to make computers man-portable. Today we have notebooks everywhere.
Or satelite handphones. I can remember those ugly things where you still needed a collector dish bigger than one man could carry.

well but it isn't automatically science fantasy because the writers didn't bother to include a 6 side essay about technological development *_*
especially when it is scientifically prooved that the concept works and its nothing just made up from the spot.

them mechanics are the same yes?
so what damage is done by M16?

what exactly are you trying to ask? the damage a m16 does in the starship troopers rpg? mentioned nowwhere, but the famous npc statistics thread assumes 1d10 damage for a "archaic rifle", as opposed to 2d8 for a morita.

probably very simmiliarg, given how both games are NOT made to be compatibile stats/costs wise
plus, noone stated that it's a POWERFUL railgun. just railgun. like there is a difference between the power of a 105mm cannon and 5.56 rifle, even when both use the same gunpowder(maybe now the cannons use something else, dunno), the same could be with raiguns. there is the 40k tau railgun, and eldar railgun(shurikat).

@ cOwgummi

I agree with you about the science fantasy, and to me that makes more sense. I would rather have fun playing a game then trying to prove the mechanics of how my standard weapon work in a fire fight.

@ Kenrick Dargoth

I would say that the easiest thing to do is use the stat for small arms from the latest S&P article featuring the Rebel army list.
