UPP Format Question

Hi gang,

Please consider the following UPP example:

Garland 0701 D310444-A S Ni Ht 123 Im

What does the 123 mean? I think the 3rd digit refers to the number of gas giants in the system (3, in this case) but I'm not sure. And what about the other two digits?

Thanks in advance!

The first number is the population multiplier as in 1x10000, or 5x10000. The second number is the number of planetoid belts in the system in addition to the one indicated by a size 0 (or asteroid belt) UPP. So a mainworld with a size of 0 and a planetoid belts of 3 would have a total of four asteroid/planetoid belts. The third numeral is the number of gas giants in the system.

Also, so as not to confuse the world stats from a characters stats, most people refer to the Universal Planetary Profile as the Universal World Profile (UWP) to avoid confusion.

Universal Personal Profile (UPP)
Universal World Profile (UWP)

BUT, early Classic Traveller material did not do that, so you may find some references that are a bit confusing.

Aka PBG (Population Belts Gas giants) -or as I remember it, Peanut Butter and Gelli...gnite.. sort of.....thingie :?

and just to confuse matters more the PBG is also known in some editions as TPPG (Travel, Population, Planetoid Belts, Gas Giants - with trade being blank if Green)

addendum: edited because I am a dufus.

I'm sure you meant it, but it's "Travel", not Trade. The T is the Travel Zone type (Red (R) or Amber (A) Zone)

:D

Thanks for the assist, everyone.

I'm trying to use theTravellerMap.com, via the Post page, with my world stats for a subsector but not everything seems to show up right. In some places, I have an "S" for a Scout base but not every planet with the "S" gets the Scout symbol on the map. I thought, perhaps, that those three numbers were somehow coming into effect here.

Speaking of bases, what are the alphabetical symbols for the bases anyway? I know "S" is for Scout, "N" is for Naval and "B" is for Both (I think). Any other base symbols for this map generator?

Don't know about specific to that but The Spinward Marches added:

Z Zhodani
D Darrian
B Sword Worlds
M Independent Military Base
2 Both a nvay and a scout base are present

In each of the CT alien modules there's different base codes for each race. IIRC K is for the K'Kree naval base for instance.

There's also alligence codes near the end of the UWP. Here's a list I found online.

Please let me know if you figure the thing out. I've tried, and it always comes out all screwy.

*cough* none

Traveller: the New Era however used Travel, Population, Planetoid Belts, Gas Giants.

Though both typically kept the Travel code spaced from the other three just enough to make it more visible. The format started in late CT, as the MT sector listing is a direct lift from the Spinward Marches Campaign, with only a few border and TL tweaks.
