Upgrading your gun with a comuter/0, why?

I’ve been looking at the rules for up grading weapons and it states that you can add a Computer/0 at TL 11 to any gun.

As I read the computer programme rules, what would the benefit of this be as you can’t use any of the Expert software. Even if you then upgraded the computer to a specialised one so it could hold the Expert programme, you still couldn’t use it, as you can’t run the Intelligent Interface software.

Is my interpretation of the rules correct or am I way off.

I came across the same issue. Have you read the insert titled "Erik's Custom Gun" on page 102 of the rule book? In short, the gun can either fire itself, or give a positive DM to the character's Gun Combat roll.

Or I completely missed your point, and what you're questioning is why even bother with a Computer/0 on your gun (because it's useless). If that's the case, you could continue with the idea that a Computer/0 is the futuristic equivalent of an iPod, and then play your own soundtracks during a fight. :)

Well, since you can run one rating 0 program on it, that basically limits you to interface 0 (maybe it provides status and controls for the gun? Eh), Security 0 (no one can mess with your gun), Translator 0 (Don't share a language with the person you're about to shoot? Let your gun translate your threats!), and Agent 0 (Shoot computer viruses along with bullets!).

Ok, I'm really reaching.

Ah! So your gun can take those last minute - 'Wait don't shoot, he's clean!' calls!

(Recommend disabling vibrate mode).

Reason why someone would add X item to some other item, even if said X item didn't actually do much of any improvement/modification of other item.

It's the lastest gadget
It's got a good review in X,A & B magazine
It looks so cool mounted on my ________
I saw X (actor/famous person) use it in _____ show
I saw a SWAT/Special forces/etc person using one
At the X convention, it was the hotest thing there (according to the all the ads I saw)

Oh, and my friend has one

Just the thing.

You're in the middle a firefight, and you pull the trigger on your gun - and it suddenly starts talking.

"It looks as if you are trying to kill an enemy. Would you like me to

- Load a round from the magazine into the chamber?

- Send a message to HQ to confirm that the soldier in my sights is, in fact, an enemy?

- Download the latest trial version of my Fire & Forget software v 3.4 (30 days' trial)?"

And after all that, the little display on the side suddenly freezes up and there's a BSoD in its place.

Please enter your registration code.

Invalid registration code, after five shots you will need to enter the registration code again.

Third attempt failed, please return the gun to The TravTech Arms Group for a new registration code.

i may have missed this, but what about just basic IFF software, so the gun wont fire if its pointed at someone with the right tranciever.

or a dna tagger so when the future csi people dig out the slug they can pin it on the right person.

Because as I read both the Core rule book as well as Central Supply Catalogue, you can add various goodies to your weapon/helmet etc such as friend and foe ID, heads up display, security lock to weapon etc without the need of adding a computer.

Therefore, since you can add a Computer/0 to a weapon yet as the rules appear to be written that you can’t run any useful software, why bother which is why I asked the question.

Now if I am right (and I admit that’s a very big IF) some house ruling is called for which will probably go down the lines of you need at least Computer/0 to run all of these goodies. :)
