Update on Battlefield Evo - The Full Scoop

Thanks matt. The response is much appreciated and has suppressed much of my outrage at the miniatures shown. I wil take you up on the offer to wait and look at the models myself. However if I am displeased still, how do I go about getting a refund? (or cancelling pre orders if I sudden;y feel obliged to cancel the pre order)

Shit happens...
and that's a load of shit.
I wouldn't pay this kind of money for what i've seen.

The game looks good and let's hope that it won't be killed by minis.

Well there are no sings that the game will be published in Poland so it doesn't concern me too much but I hope that everything will be alright and MP won't f*** up SST (cash looses after BF could affect SST).

Good luck!

Give your order details to the sales dude over email and request it. I personally haven't seen the piccies, but well are they really that bad? I'll go dig out the loot and stare deeply at it before further commenting...

Oh... Well honestly the PLA are a bit wierd. One of the us marines was cokcing an eye-brow at me. I have finally finished my MI, so now I can start saving up for my aussies.

My take is this.

First I task people to go to mongoose main site and look at the new pictures for each unit. Specifically, look at the pictures that show the figures at gaming height or from a bit closer. These paint jobs are enough to get them on the table and playing.

Yes, the figures are worse, but I'm still buying at least a small army. Probably 2 infantry squads and a tank for each army. I'm a gamer primarily, even though I can paint figures quite well I have neither the time or patience to sit and paint the same miniatures over. I won't be buying a larger army until the quality gets better, though. But for now this will suffice.

For me, the gameplay is still key. I've always liked the SST rulesset at its core, but it needed a lot of cleanup, not to mention more armies. BFE and SSTE are basically that

Second, there's a new picture of the actual game boxes on the BFE page, which shows that the game boxes have clear plastic. Meaning you can see what you're getting. So overall if you don't like the miniature you don't have to buy. Not to mention that there are plenty of 28mm moderns out there, I wouldn't mind playing against an army from a different manufacturer, it's just I don't want to be bothered with assembling and painting my own army.

As per what Matt said, I really think they should have started with a scifi game like SST. Similar to what AT-43 is. If you notice, the AT-43 miniatures have paint schemes that are nowhere near as complex as BFE, they're a few base colors and a wash. Admittedly, the sculpts of AT-43 are a lot more crisp than Mongoose, something which mongoose really needs to work on.

Thanks for the comments Mr. Sprange... Nasty turn of events, this. Much screaming has ensued and there'll be more of it, and louder before this is over.

While I see the paintjobs as acceptable, apart from the eyes (are they tansfers or what :?), I still can't but feel disappointed as they are so subpar compared to what we were promised. And I'm certainly not enthusiastic about paying the cost of unpainted metal for these any longer.

This debacle makes me, and a lot of other people (almost) solely ordering on the 'net I wager, unlikely to invest in this. And unfortunately and undeservedly as it may be, the stigma will carry over to SST:E as well. Was looking forward to that.

This is true, it's very hard to justify trying new stuff when you live 200+ km from the nearest store that carries PROPER(ie not GW) wargaming stuff..

Whatever, I'm still gonna play it. I have heard nothing but great things about the rules and I, for one, do not have time to paint models.

I still can't help but laugh though...the eyes on those guys make the models look like something Seth Green would put in an episode of "Robot Chicken." Its too funny.

I just hope a local store carries it here in Los Angeles so I can look at them first.

Hmmmm... well I must say I'm a little dissapointed :( Yes I'm sure they are still as good or a bit better than the current prepaints availble for things like SW minis and D&D but the BF evo infantry is actually pretty expensive. I would have gladly paid that bit extra for the quality originally promised but now I'm far from sure. Going of the pics yeasterday I definitely wouldnt but I will probably wait till a local shop picks up a box/order one box to test the waters and judge for myself.

On the plus side I will almost certainly still buy the book (please tell me it's been proofread though.... ;)) as I've heard nothing but good things about the game itself and if I dont like the miniatures theres certainly plenty of alternatives available for infantry. Also the tanks do actually look good still.

Again thanks for being honest with us and keeping us informed Matt, though I would just like to agree with whoever it was who mentioned that deleteing the threads may have been a mistake. I can certainly understand why it was done as alot of people (myself included) jumped the gun a bit in venting our spleens about the photos, but it does make it look like things are being swept under the rug. It's always been one of the things I respect Mongoose most for that you guys DONT delete/lock threads if people are critisising a product, even possitively lynching a product but never mind. Hopefuly the next wave and/or SST evo will be better.

ps. if the price came down a bit on the BF Evo infantry I think it might be alot more appealing as hinted above. I dont mind paying above average prices, but I expect above average quality to justify it and from what Ive seen these minis are about AS good and certainly not signifigantly better, than the current prepainted minis out there :(

ive got an army that uses hero clix minis bought of ebay they on average cost me upto 40pence each and all i need to do is rebase them.

i know mongoose wont be that cheap, but £20 for the boxsets, i think there have trouble shifting, i do love the boxes their in by the way, and i think this adds to thier value, in the future be nice if their was some barrels and stuff included in the boxes, adding to the scene and being free terrain.

£15 - £16 il be up for it, but £20 seems a bit steep. especialy when i can see the yanks are only paying $30 a box

Hi its Alan a playtester on BF EVO...

Thanks matt on the thread today, i do like the new boxes their are in, i will keep a eye out for them.

ON BF EVO

I myself will not be buying the minis of BF, as i`m poor on the money side of things at the mo, so i will be buying over time my own minis, to add to the modern ones i already have from last year....
Be it 28mm or 20mm

Nothing to do with the new and old pics, just costs for me, and i do hope that i get more time to paint in the future...

NOW ON TO THE RULES... " The Meat "

BF EVO is the best set of modern day rules i have seen, yes its easy and fast, but i have had about 4 sets of modern rules, and never played them, too many rules on spotting, and command ranges, action points etc, one game has each fig having 10 action points..!! try that with 30+ figs on the table...!!!

Great rules, even that they are set in 2014, its basic modern combat with a little high tech stuff, but not alot.

So battles in the falklands, coldwar 80`s, " Red dawn " and black hawk down, easy, nice rules on helicopters
"Yes a Rpg can take out a british lynx ( wave 4 ).

If the rulebook comes out for salute, then grab it, and what minis you want, and have fun, i know you will.

NOW SST EVO

I have the old game, but not played it,( glueing bugs..!!! ) i have had the basic rules and the first couple of waves to look at of SST EVO, and its a much better game to play, you SST players will like it.

ALSO unlike me if you already have loads of SST minis already, then the moment the SST hardback book comes out, you will be one happy customer, you luck devils..!!!
I wished i started buying SST figures now..... Humbug..!!!

Mongoose still making great rule sets, and customer support....

everything the competitions coming out with was rubbish by comparison,

We have never said that. In fact, our staff are forbidden to say that about any of our products.

You are looking at it the wrong way round - the US should be priced at $40. The trouble is, it will take a little while yet for prices in the US to stabilise to the current exchange rates (and, in some areas, they won't change at all).

well it still makes it more viable to buy from the staes than the uk, i now buy 90% of my minis from the US due to these price diferances. and im sure americans wouldnt stomach $40 for a box set so whay should the brits ? we have less exspendable income than yanks due to cost of living differances. it all hurts the LGS, somthing im complaining about to Rakam at the moment about. its not just MP other companies are the same.

still, many thanks for youe swift reply, but its still hard to stomach

Painting aside, has the production company actually committed to being able to recreate the sculpt quality of the original minis?

The offer for a refund on preorders is nice, but how does that work if you didn't order direct from Mongoose?

Thanks for your candor, Matt, and I do wish Mongoose the best of luck in dealing with these issues.

Still, I think this should *also* be dealt with:

http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22241

There are a lot of comments in there which refer to the prototype pictures, but now accidentally have the new pics above them. I'd suggest this thread be deleted as well, in fairness.

Don't know if people noticed, but the new pics seems to be up. And they do look better. I'm still disappointed by the MEA, but PLA and EFTF looks ok. I'm still undecided about the USMC.

They do not look like the original pictures, but I don't think anyone was expecting that ;)

I think the figs are useable. The problem I have with the USMC is that the digital camo is gone. I don't kow what camo they are in, but it's not the digital style from the preview pics. Hopefully that pattern will be on wave 2+.
