How would it do against the Millenium Falcon? Has anyone ever done a Traveller Version of the Millenium Falcon, by replacing the hyperdrive with an appropriate Jump Drive? The technical specs say the Millenium Falcon has a cargo capacity of 100 tons I'd say the Falcon was at least twice the size of a type S Scout/Courier, probably the closest equivalent in the Traveller Universe would be the Far Trader. (On second thought maybe its closer to a pirate's corvette) I believe the Falcon has two turrets, one on top and the other on the bottom, they fire quadruple turreted pulse lasers.

I would love to throw my money at someone who would illustrate the standard Traveller ships in that style.

We've looked at it :)

The issues are:

a) Time and cost - you can have one ship done like this, perhaps two or three. But when you have 20-odd in the Core book and are adding more in supplements, it quickly gets prohibitive. After all, you want the Core book this decade, right? :)

b) Utility. We have run into this time and again when looking at new ways to present ships. We want them to look pretty but, at the same time, they need to be actually usable in a game. This greatly restricts what you can do.

c) Space. At the moment, we are running to two pages per ship, and that really has to be the maximum, After all, you want things other than ships in your books.

We are always looking for ways to improve (see the Core rulebook in the next update for a big revision in how ships are presented), but practicality is ever the enemy of art...

Matt,

The micro-books that have been published for $5.99, and Ian's books as well as Gypsy Knight and others show that there is a market for this. I'm all for cool and jazzy artwork (it sells!), but I think you are right in finding a balance for it.

Then again, there's always 1/4 and 1/2 page detailed illustrations too... :P

also that sort of very precise blue print work is time consuming, and mindbogglingly tedious...anyone who has the patience and attention to detail to do that work has my admiration....

Yeah well unfortunately under the skins of most of my ships here is a horror not meant for man to see.....shudder.........

What would you say if someone depicts a Scout Courier with fiery rocket exhaust coming out the back? Would you say that person doesn't know much about Traveller?

An odd question..

Yes and no, if it had a reaction drive yes, if it had the standard grav drive, no.
Strictly speaking any sort of glow or 'nozzles' would not be there.

Me I like a sort of nozzle like projection for the drives and a faint glow.. I know plenty would argue no that would not happen, I don't care I like it. I am sure I could make something up that would explain it.

I'd say there have been several versions of Traveller and no one final definitive explanation/speculation as to how an M drive may work. So you can draw a fictional spacecraft any which way you like.

It still comes down to whether the artwork fires your imagination, which Mr McNulty's does!
