TV Shows You DON'T Want To See Made Over For Traveller ...

I wouldn't want to see

-Medium

-Ghost whisperer

And I would be totally Neutral seeing though I wouldn't be inclined to develop these settings if I had to have a hand in it.

-11'nth Hour (cancelled series)

-Mentalist

Mentalist would be interesting. It could be about the use of psionics in solving crime!!! Or it could be called Psych  !!
You don't need Psionics there to solve a crime. You would, however, need some or all the following mundane skills, preferably as high as possible:-

Advocate, Carouse, Deception, Diplomat, possibly Gambler, Investigate, Interrogation (from Book 4: Mercenary, specialities *Tells, *NLP), Life Sciences (Psychology, *Hypnosis) and Persuade.

Optional would be Admin, Athletics (whatever), Broker, Gun Combat, J-o-T, Language (any), Leadership and Steward.

A high Intelligence and Education should come as standard.

Specialities listed below are not canon, but really should be:-

*Tells - The ability to analyse a subject's mood, motivations and truthfulness by scrutiny of his microexpressions - the Effect of a successful Interrogation skill check with this speciality may even be used in opposed Gambler skill checks in games of chance;

*NLP - The study of Neuro Linguistic Programming to extract the truth from a subject by what he says - or does not say.

*Hypnosis - The study of altered mental states.

 This would take the main character to the age of 42 at least. But it could be an intersting character. Not much of combat but with a dude (or dudette) like that you might not need much combat.

Trust me, a 42 year old can do a lot of things that a 26 y.o. would be stumped over, just as a 52 y.o. can probably call upon life experiences that would make the 42 y.o. seem a callow youth by comparison.

There's a lot to be said for maturity and experience. Just ask Lazarus Long, Yoda and The Doctor. ;)

I'm just watching the Aaarniiee adaptation of Total Recall, and I'm thinking that any movie adaptation of any book, whether it be Der Governator, Tom Cruise in Minority Report, Will Smith in I, Robot or Bruce Willis in Surrogates, seriously can't be a safe bet for a good RPG adaptation.

And then I thought of the absolute clincher that sums up my case beyond hope of refutation.

Sly Stallone starring as Judge Dredd.

I rest my case. Honestly, my honourable colleague for the Defense might as well retire now.

Seriously.. you wouldn't want HIGHLANDER????!!!!

I think the idea of sword wielding imortals running around on starships cutting each other's heads off and frying all the electronics would be AWESOME! (As NPCs of course). Putting a group of Firefly free traders into that situation could seriously mess with their heads.

 I'm picturing Christopher Lambert sitting in a quiet, dark cargo hold with his sword between his knees waiting for centuries for some curious ship to passby....

(Probably captained by Sean Connery!)

Can you imagine trying to roll up a centuries old immortal using Traveller's PC generation system?

"Ok, you just washed out the Imperial Navy on your 410th term."
"Man, that's the 7th time I haven't made my 20 years!"

Of course, after a certain point, all the immortals would just look alike:

FFFFFF for their UPP, 5s for all their skills.

Psionics and an irritatingly patronising attitude towards the mayfly run of regular player characters.

"Why, sonny, you know what they were doing for amusement back in my day?" "I dunno, Pop, maybe paint horses on cave walls?"

"Hey, doll, where have you been all my life?" "For most of it, I wasn't even born."

Hmmm... Actually - all one needs to do is eliminate aging effects (and re-enlistment limits) and ignore death as a result of 000 physical stats and its done. Oh - and add death by beheading and several psionic talents (not sure about electrostatic disturbances - may need to add something there) :D

Very minor tweaks actually - probably be done in a couple paragraphs... Voila - HT!

Well, re-enlistment limits should still be in effect, they can just get around them by moving on to a different planet/system/sector.

Would need some special life events tables, I think.

And I'm still curious as to how many terms it requires to guarantee at least half the stats/skills are maxed out?

Or throw in that CT favorite INT+EDU=Max Skill Levels

So no matter how old you get, you still have a limited amount of knowledge you could retain. None of the Immortals in Highlander seemed to be supergeniuses who could do anything. Also, wasn't there an episode in the series where they talk about none of the immortals having great creativity... The woman was a internationally renouned concert pianist but lost her talent for playing when she became immortal? She later got it back by NOT fighting and risking her life...

I would argue that once you become immortal, your ability to learn new skills goes WAY down. Instead of 1-2 skills per term it becomes 1-2 skills per century or something like that.

Your age freezes at the age you became immortal.

As I said, NPCs only...

Who says that there has to be game balance? :) Your PCs could be facing the same (non-Highlander, just the normal medical not-dying type) immortal enemy throughout their campaign, popping up to irritate the Betelgeuse out of them like Ra's al-Ghul used to in Batman.

Indeed, the NPC could easily adopt the policy of outliving their PC foes and letting them fall, one by one, to violence or accident rather than fight them on their terms, charging towards them with weapons blazing.

They might even come in at one point, not as an enemy, but as a benefactor and tempter, offering them the same immortality they have ... at a price ...

As a T-shirt my dad owns says:

"Old age and treachery can beat youth and skill!"

That's misquote, it should read "Old age and treachery always beats youth and skill".

Just ask my boy.
