We could certasinly do with some more ships in this book!

Since I don't have the ability to create original deck plans would it be permissible to use existing ships with the understanding Mongoose will supply the deck plans?

I have an idea for a pirate group that might be of use.

Thanks for your time and efforts.

This is interesting. I've suddenly been taken up with revisiting Traveller having dabbled in it when first released (i.e I'm Classic Traveller background) and my main interest has been in seeing who, what and how the starship rules have been modified since then. I've got a few ship designs I'd be keen to dust off and perhaps submit one here if I like the final result, but I've actually not got any idea of the balance of Mongoose's ship building rules at this point. I'm in the process of checking the various iterations of Traveller since High Guard etc. and on a learning curve which I'm enjoying. The original rules didn't really cut it in the intended directions of ship design (fleets of light meson gun transported planetoids anyone, heh). Would somebody like to give me a few pointers about the relative strengths of Mongoose's ship building combat rules? What kind of ship does it favor?

Deck plans I'll be able to fudge. But for me the interest is also the background the ship and its various usages, it's nice to have a bit of fluff to go with the crunch and I'd hope there's room for that Matt.

There's a thread here in this section of the forum that details out a combat, if you can dig that up it might help you out.

Don't see why not, fluff is good to.

Thanks. Purchased High Guard and the Trillion Credit squadron and getting my head around this version of Traveller now. Anyone aware of any important errata out there? (it's great being a noob again, heh)

Just to let budding Traveller writers know...

We are getting to the end of our big pile of submitted articles (many of you waiting will have already had emails saying we want your stuff!), and we are beginning to prep Compendium 3.

If anyone has any articles they wanted to submit, now would be a very good time!

If the submitted article is accepted, what article rights are Mongoose Publishing purchasing?
If accepted and paid for, complete rights to the text and submitted art.
In US legal terms, does "complete rights" mean that the article is treated as "work for hire", exclusive publication for the duration of Mongoose's license to Traveller, or something else? (I know you're a UK company, but I'm in the US, and I don't know UK publishing rules except where they coincide with US rules.)

As for art and illustrations, how do you determine payment? For example, a ship article is likely to be pretty light on words, but deck plans are required, and (depending on ship size and complexity) they might require more work than the writing.

Also, a suggestion: the May 21 wish-list update isn't as easy to locate as the list at the beginning of the thread. It might be a good idea to edit in updates to the top-of-thread article that point to the latest version of the wish list.

My concern with the legalese would be more if I wanted to recycle the characters, the subject, or the themes somewhere else.

IANAL and I am sure Matt will answer with Mongoose's POV but IIRC complete rights means just that: All rights gone, forever. This may be limited by some restrictions; I am fairly sure under German (I live in Germany) laws you can't sign away certain rights (such as being credited for your work) and this might be European law, but I can't be sure.

Personally, I would never, ever, consider signing away "complete rights" for anything. I figure if something I create is good enough for someone else to want to publish it, then it's axiomatically too valuable to give away completely. Of course I also don't hope to make a living writing so my viewpoint may be skewed.

Do keep in mind that anything you create based on other people's work - which would presumably cover the entirety of the 3I - may not be entirely your own property to begin with. And also keep in mind that pure game rules are not protected under copyright (in the US as well as the EU, if memory serves me right) anyway.

I do realize you are probably aware of this, but you should definitely ask an attorney if you have legal questions like this. Copyright is a complex matter. Nobody else - Certainly not I and presumably including Matt, no offense - is qualified to really advise you on such matters.

If we've submitted when/how will we know if it's been accepted?

You'll get a reply - it may take a while, as we are very busy at the moment, but we do get to all of them.

Are there any websites that allow you to create deck plans online? I fear that my terrible diagrams using Paint won't pass muster.
