Traveller versions seperate?

CosmicGamer

Mongoose
I think having the Traveller Beta in a different section of the forums was good. Now that it is released, will the old and new versions of Mongoose Traveller get separate forum space? The new version is different enough that there could be much confusion if both are discussed together.

I was wondering the same..
I don't know how the new version is, but I suppose that he will need a different section on the forum.

But then, where the discussion unrelated to any Traveller edition will go?
And where's the line? Some discussion are unrelated to any edition, but others seem unrelated but are not.

No, we only keep one edition as 'official' (nothing to stop you talking about the first edition though!).

I suppose we'll have to sign the topic names of the first edition to make them recognizable from the second one, something like [1ed] Topic Name Here.
Is it possible to apply this sign to the old threads? This would make easier to search for old edition topics.

Nevertheless I'd prefer keeping the two forums separated, but it's just my opinion.

Why? The two edition are significantly the same, and there is the minor fact-oid as other editions of Traveller get mentioned in this forum all the time. Why should there be a scism?

I don't see a problem with this since the majority of the stuff is the same between editions.

I think a there are two solutions. First is like you said, suggesting that people put [1E] or [2E] in their post titles when the question is specific to one of the versions. This could be posted in a sticky so that people would see it. This is pretty easy, simple, and striaghtforward to implement. :D

Another is to add a topic icon for people to check off an edition if their post is specific to one and have an icon show up with that post on the forums. This is a slightly "slicker" solution, but would require Mongoose to have a technical resource install/create the add-on, test it, and deploy it. So the first suggestion is probably more likely.

As for modifying all the posts that already exist, that's a BAD idea. While technically doable, it could cause problems with any existing links to topics and stuff like that. Besides, it is never a good idea to directly edit the database of an application if you don't have to (I know this from experience!).

It seems the only problem would be rules issues that are specific to one or the other otherwise it is the same game. You can talk about ships in general but might need a designator if it focuses on ship stats and related mechanics. Tagging 1stEd or 2ndEd seems simple enough.

Hello all,

Based on my experience on various Traveller and other game forums the simplest way, as suggested earlier in the thread, is to use an identifier of some sort. My current method of identification is Traveller Core Rulebook 2008 Space Craft Design. Of course using 1st ed. or 2nd ed. is good too.

Just my 2 credits.

I sow it but I find it too lengthy and that "hides" the actual thread title.
But yeah, we should use some sort of short identifier.

I like DickNervous' one: [1E] / [2E].
They convey the necessary information and they cannot be shorter than that :)

Howdy FraNe91,

Thank you for the reply and confirming I am still over killing my identification.;-)

My method has become a habit from a different games forum format requirement. Of course there is also an established short-hand method for book titles. For example a title like the Rules of War would be RoW, unfortunately I am not sure how to do short-hand for Mongoose titles and I do not want to be unclear what is being discussed.

But they are different in many ways. Currently by default any question or comment is assumed to be about the Mongoose rules and people usualy specify if they are bringing something in from another version for comparison. And not everyone will have both versions to know the differences.
