Traveller Tools Drop Down Menu

Hi everyone,

We have made a little change to the home page of our website. If you take a squiz at the main menu running across the top, you will see we have added a Traveller Tools drop down menu that will take you to various places that have, well, tools for Traveller!

What have we missed? Anything else we should be adding?

There should be a link to the downloads section for things like spreadsheets, deckplans etc. I know they are there but it makes sense to me for Traveller Tools to include the spreadsheets that help build systems, robots etc.

Bit of a duplication? The Downloads buttons is three steps to the left of the Tools button?

Possibly adding better logic and categorisation, with thoughts along these lines:

Agree, a download is different to a tool:
  • A download ('downloadable file') is a file that is accessible/obtainable over a network
  • A tool is something that enhances productivity, transforming input data to output results. (Computing definition)
  • Sure, some tools (like Spreadsheets) produce specially formatted files that are only readable by that tool. Doesn't mean a tool is duplication of a download.
Not only Traveller:
  • The download tab is content for all Mongoose products, not exclusively Traveller resources. Another reason to keep both of them separate.
  • Similarly, Mongoose Discord is for all Mongoose products, not exclusively Traveller. So perhaps this too should not be under the heading of Traveller Tool?
Internet Forums/Message Boards or Messaging Services are not Tools:
  • Citizens of the Imperium is a Forum, which is a Virtual Community, not a Tool.
  • Similarly, Mongoose Discord is a Messaging Service, also a Virtual Community, not a Tool.
  • Suggestion to rename the Forum tab to Virtual Community. Then move the link to this forum, COTI and Mongoose Discord under the Forum/Virtual Community tab.
Wikis are not Tools:
  • Traveller Wiki is a community edited Encyclopaedia, which is a knowledge-base, not a tool.
  • Suggestion: Since a Wiki is Community run, it too could be moved into the Virtual Community tab.
Mongoose portfolio of products:
  • Suggestion: Traveller Tools is Traveller RPG specific, so could be moved to RPGS > TRAVELLER submenu.
  • Mongoose offer a variety of products, not just Traveller. The Traveller Tools tab located along the homepage menu ribbon could be distracting for anyone visiting site for games and products other than Traveller.
  • Traveller may be the eldest and most popular product from the portfolio, but I would like to see communities and tools grow and develop for some other products too, without feeling that everything automatically gets eclipsed by the dominance of Traveller RPG.

Maybe looks like this (suggestions):
:D
  • RPGS
    • Traveller
      • Start Here
      • ...
      • Traveller Tools
        • Traveller Map
        • Traveller Worlds
        • Alien Word Generators
        • Traveller Licencing
    • (Rest of games portfolios)
  • Only on EBook
  • Downloads
    • Traveller
    • Paranoia
    • Shield Maidens
  • Release Schedule
  • Virtual Communities
    • Traveller Wiki
    • Citizens of the Imperium
    • Mongoose Discord
    • Mongoose Forum

I like it! I will direct my players to it.

I might suggest some links to Youtube Traveller content creators. Especially Page121, Ardwulf's Lair, and of course Seth Skorkowsky's videos. Perhaps spotlight some specific reviews by others that may not cover Traveller as heavily in general. For sure probably 95% or whatever of those checking the site out are already converted but that would be mighty useful for the small percentage that aren't already committed consumers of the game and are checking out your website thinking of getting into the game.
