Traveller Magic

I tend to take a Well World approach to Magic. Makes thinking of how to make it work, a lot easier.

I've not read those books; would you be willing to elucidate, please?

Essentially ultra-high tech as per Clarke's rule. The universe is a mathematical construct maintained by a computer (the Well World) and you can tweak the computer if you understand it (well, that's how I recall it after 20 some years since last reading it. And Mavra Chang & Obie [I think that was the computer's name] would make for an interesting patron as long as you keep them in the background).

My 1st Traveller character was Nathan Brazil. Not like the one in the book but I liked the name. And it happens to be the name I use on this forum.

Right, so if you boil it down, to Math, then it's all about Cause and effect. Minimal die mechanic.

Excellent series of books by the way. I've always liked using the Well World as a demo piece, so in order to do "magic" in that setting it's basically, a skill paired with an extra stat (like psionics is), or an average of existing stats (Think, the Balance of Kung Fu Chi), and then, using the Psionic basics as a foundation (target numbers), and supplementary skills, it's actually pretty easy, to work out the "effect" you want to cause.

I'm wondering know how well magic will mix with Traveller. I'd love to try to revive Dragonstar using the new Traveller rules, assuming the magic system is compatible with that campaign.

Mixes perfectly well, provided you keep the scale of the game in mind. So, you wouldn't want, the magical Equivalent, of an FGMP-15, do do more damage and game effect, then an FGMP-15.

You keep it all scaled together.

Working on adapting David Webers (and friend) Hells Gate just for my personal amusement. Got both Magic, Magic Items, vs Steam level Technology, and Psionics. Dragons vs Trains that sort of thing.

So, as long as you keep the SCALE in line, you shouldn't have any issues. One of the controlling Factors in Well World for example, is that some things work in All Hexes of the Well World, Some things Don't, and Other Things, only work in One. Same thing for Hell's Gate. Magic, is stronger the closer you get to It's Source, Psionic and technology the closer to it's source. It's not so much, that one is stronger then the other it's that it's chances of working correctly, varied.......but kept to within the same range of each other.

When you skew it out, like saying, MAGIC MISSILE, does 10 times the damage of a 9MM APDS round, then it starts to break down.

My Well World game is going real well with all these things in mind, and to be honest I can amuse myself for hours just playing with "effects" that can be brought into play with just the core rules.

H'mm. Music described by non-musicians, art described by non-artists, science in the hands of non-scientists, and now magic described by non-magicians.

Something just triggered my reticence subroutines.

Well regardless of what Mongoose does with magic, I just wanted to see their style of doing things. If I do include magic in the game, most likely I will use a version of BRP style in the game for the NPCs and inwhich the PC might encounter. I will NOT have it running amock thoughout my Traveller game though.

Hey Twin Dragons, I had a blast running Dragonstar back in the day. I was sorry to see it fade away.
I'd personally be very interested in a Magic supplement for Traveller.

I personally love Science Fantasy. The only way magic would replace technology is if a majority of the populace were able to use magic. I don't think it would disrupt much in a game, and hasn't in any of the games I have played. I have noticed that there is a bit of antagonism towards magic in a futuristic setting, and I think it could actually add a bit of interesting twists. One of my old GMs hated mixing the two, but loved Rifts. I have talked to many people that hate the Spelljammer setting because "It goes too far." I never got to play DragonStar, but I have most of the books, I am one of those collecter types, I thought it would be very fun to play. It really depends on the GM and players as to what they are comfortable with, though I have talked groups into letting me GM a sci-fantasy game and after they gave it a chance they loved the concept. I am looking forward to being able to integrate magic into Traveller, for me it can only add to it's already incredible richness.

If it helps, I've created a magic system for Traveller that is OGL, and so is available for others to use in their own publishing efforts. You can find the post about the announcement here:

I offer this simply for your consideration, in case you guys wanted to see such a system now while you wait for Strontium Dog.

Hey Flynn, I got my own copy of your book yesturday. I like what you did pretty much so far. I have to take the time a fully read it but so far you covered everything one would need. I think I might add on to it, but your system is very well put together. You have a very nice job, pat yourself on the back.

If you add anything on to it, I'd love to see it. Who knows? It may inspire me to do more with the system. :)

Thanks for the kind words,
Flynn

I have been giving it some thought Flynn, and I want to add more fluff to it. I think adding Occult, Paranormal, and Rituals will add some more needed color to the system. There are many elements to consider and one but needs to work them out to better explain how it all works and play. It is the extra fluff that addes to the game play and excitement.
