Traveller Beta Playtest Rulebook

Hello,

Are character from last edition MgTraveller compatible and portable to this one ? I Have the frenh one, and I don't want asking my players to reroll their characters.

Thanks
I took ten characters we had created with the first edition and all I had to do to make then useable in the beta was some skill adjustment. For example some skills are now grouped together so I just needed to change the name to reflect the new edition. Attributes did not change.

Hello,

I just bought the beta tester bundle, as I definitely wants to participate in beta testing of Traveller. I did like the previous edition of Mongoose, but it had some very very annoying flaws. Main part of these flaws is character generation compared to character advancement and skill level description. I honestly do not think it would break the Traveller feel at all.

First, I would like to suggest simple change which should be still doable: skill points for character generation to represent partial advancement in skills, and skill point cost to skills according to current level. This would make the skill maximum of 4 limit unnecessary, as getting skill to 4 would require several terms, and skill level 5 would take ages.

Thus instead of advancing skill by 1, you would get skill point to that skill. I would suggest simple pyramid cost: advancement costs 1 SP per level. This would be the case regardless where you get the pick making the benefit conversion to skill also way more realistic.

I have to create several characters to see if this suggestion is enough or should additional skill rolls to be added to terms to a bit balance out the lesser skill levels.

I think the main issue I have with the Mongoose products is they are slowly but surely eroding the original Traveller concepts of swordfighting on spaceships, of psi-training being banned, of simple rules with flexibility, of a romantic era of space travel where communication was slow, where spaceships were small and weak. I guess it all started going wrong for me with Mercenary and High Guard. Maybe that is the fault of MM not Mongoose for losing his own way and spoiling his own fascinating creation. But once you start getting into the realms of high science and mega technology I think the interesting setting of the original game is completely lost. Its a shame I feel that Mongoose haven't taken the opportunity presented by this rewrite to try to reclaim some of the romanticism of the original rules.

I think the problem is not Mongoose, but players wanting to use all rule books. The romantic era had Ships of the Line (HIgh Guard). Those ships should be military ships, and I honestly want military vessels to be way stronger than trader ships and average pirate ships. But those capital ships are expensive to maintain - they require vast crews compared to average trader with 1 to 4 crew.

On classic era Pisonics were banned, but all major players (starting from notorious Imperial Naval Intelligence) had their own psionic special forces.

Game master needs psionic rules, because some enemies use them. Zhodani does not have illegal psionics. I would also believe all Zhodani world citizens should be tested before first term.

Note most discussion takes place over in the Traveller Playtest section of the forum (you can just scroll down from the Board Index) or:

So it's $20 instead of free then?

I had hoped it was free.
Keep in mind, you will also gain access to beta documents for other products as well. Right now we have access to the beta document for one of the adventures as well as the Central Supply Catalog. Later we will gain access to the beta for the High Guard for example. So the payment is for more than just the single beta document. And as Andrew pointed out, it gets you credit toward the final product as well.

From my point of view, I was going to buy the final product anyway, so this just allowed me early access, insight into it's final development, and a chance to have lots of fun conversations both here and off line about the rules.

AND you get a $20 off the final published product, so in the end it is free, but you have to be willing to make a commitment; keeps the riff-raff out! :)

Guess I'm the riff-raff because I don't plan to pay for it!

The artwork could need some improvement (I guess the images are still placeholders), but the new layout is totally awesome.

In hand - the new artwork won't start appearing until December.

Just trying to buy the Beta from DrivethruRPG.com and there seems to be a problem. The whole site is extremely slow and my shopping cart page just freezes.

It's probably Black Friday mayhem on the cyberspace, but it's annoying!

I received an update to my old core rule book via drivethrurpg. I hadn't checked my library in over a year so I was surprised to find it was now a 248 page book with no ship design.

Did I end up getting the playtest? The cover is different than what I see on DTRPG. Actually it doesn't seem to have a cover, it starts on the contents page.

Sounds like the playtest version.

How will this affect the 2300AD line? Will the old books be compatible with Traveller 2nd ed? Or will there be new books? Or will 2300AD be discontinued? Any ideas?
