Hi. I'm passionate, dedicated, opinionated, and yes, pugnacious.
Well then you will fit right in with most of us here. I know I fit that descriptor as well.

Is he using "mong" in a derogatory / bigoted / anti-disablist manner? I've a Downs Syndrome relative, and that is a deeply offensive review to me.

I can happily dismiss that whole review, and the reviewer, as irrelevant. Sour grapes.

I know Erin well enough to know that she certainly meant nothing of the sort. I understand your reaction but I feel confident that she had no intention of "mong" being anything but short for Mongoose.
It's worth adding four more letters to each iteration of the word, just to make it clear.

Pugnacious, in my book, means someone who likes to hit people.

I kind of prefer all the violence in my life to be handled in my imagination, through the agency of my player characters.

Right, because people always say "Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition" and never ever say "D&D 5."

Hey, I notice you said "it's" instead of "it is." I think you should add that extra letter, just to make your words clear.

Erin knows MgT and MgT2 are the labels used, just doesn't care and is looking for revenge of some kind against Mongoose.

Hey Shawn, since you can read my mind and determine both my intent and what I do and don't know, can you tell me where I put my car keys? I can't find them and that's driving me crazy.

Hoping this thread doesn't continue to degenerate into personal insults... :(
I skimmed through the new play test over the long holiday weekend (Labor Day weekend in the States) and I liked what I saw... so far, but I admit I've spent less than an hour skimming it. I'm hoping to see some of the issues in ship design fixed (that I personally don't like) like rule of bridge sizes for instance.. (It's an Architecture thing... space relations vs. size/volume/amount of crew stations required etc..). As AndrewW mentioned a few times already, I'll hold my full comments for the proper thread. But I would like to take this time thank him and the Mongoose crew as a whole for taking a critical look at their product and making major changes in the game mechanics when required, streamlining and consolidating some skills, and upgrading the presentation of the rules to keep up with competing games systems, modern tastes, and modern expectations of graphics and layout. I've already caught a few minor mistakes, but I'll issue that later... I'm guessing much of what I find has already been red-lined by Mongoose anyway.
Can't wait until I have a real chance to review and play test. Particularly interested in High Guard!
Thank you Mongoose peoples! :)

That's the troll. Now you know.

RE: Mong, I've heard read it since 2009, it is insulting why again? That is the first I have heard of that.

Bridges don't get as large as they did.

Ah, Matthew deserves the credit I just help out a little here and there.

Lets avoid any further personal attacks. Discussion is encouraged as long as it doesn't become name calling and the like.

Not meaning to dig this up but I think the use of the word mong should be clarified.

I think this is two countries separated by a common language.

Mong back in the UK is short for mongoloid and is always used in a derogatory context, either aimed at people with Downs Syndrome or likening a person to one who has Downs. The second meaning of the word being a reference to Mongolia has racist undertones when used out of the context of describing a persons ethnicity.

Now I'm getting that it isn't used that way here but it puts my back up, yes it's a cultural difference but it's offensive to me. Go ahead and use your first amendment rights, but would you use the word nigger on a blog?

Funny, I was always taught it was someone "having a quarrelsome or combative nature". By that definition several of us, yes I said us, are Pugnacious.

Back on topic, I would hate to let the tone of Erin's review mask the legitimate points raised. Many of the same points raised over in the playtest section. Maybe we should all stroll over there and discuss them in the correct threads.

Sad to say it is showing up here in US High Schools as well. My eldest is 'Special Ed" and is well aware of what some kinds mean when they call them Mongs. :(

But on that note, I am off to the Playtest forum to see what fun debates are raging.

I've already said it wasn't used in any derogatory context. As an American, I am not conversant with UK slang. I fail to see why I should feel ashamed about an innocent mistake, especially since I haven't insulted anyone on this board.

So... it's okay when YOU say it on a forum?

Just to be clear, I have never used it to be offensive, I have been an avid supporter of mongoose; I will not use it anymore, however.

I hesitate to step into this mess, but the "M" word isn't something that I've ever heard used in Texas, at least. Variants of it (such as the one made famous in "Blazing Saddles"), but this is like the "K" word in 2300. Meaningless to some people, highly offensive to others.

Also - howdy Erin, big fan of your blog.

Trust me when I say that for me, I would always assume anyone who used it here was thinking a short word for Mongoose. Context drives meaning for me. Just as we use CT here to mean one thing but CT also means something very different at my work. Reading work memo it means one thing, reading post here it means another. Context.
