Traveller AR (the upcoming iPhone Game) May Update

I don't understand why this game uses Augmented Reality, it makes no sense in this context whatsoever. It's as if they had a brainstorming session and someone wrote 'AR!!!!1!!one!!11!" on the board so now it has it.

I would have to greatly agree. I fear making this app AR will only sidetrack from making it a good Traveller trade/fight/explore game. I don't need to see my office as the background for my Free Trader repelling a pirate ship. I need to see the blackness of space, stars, planets, etc. Kinda stupid if this is what they have planned, it just lowers the immersion level. Please tell me this is not what they will be doing or that we will have the option of turning the "real world" off in the background.

I would tend to agree also that "AR is cool, let's make sure that gets in there" was the impetus behind this, not consideration of it being fitting for a Traveller app.

EDIT: Took a look at their website and my hope is restored. AR will be an option only. The default seems to be the generated background, you have the option of turning it off to see the real world with objects overlayed. That's fine with me as long as it is only an option (that I won't use) since I don't want to see my ship landing on my grilled cheese sandwhich.

This is exactly what they mean: "See a virtual 3D world over-layed on the real world through the window of your iPhone."

I have NO idea why that would be desirable.

No problem then. Just another feature that takes advantage of the abilities of the hardware. I guess you could lay in your hammock on a starry night and use it. Might be cool at that. :D

Do we know what the combat is going to be like?
I cant remember, I might have asked that before. After all, AR would be pointless with ranges of 50,000 kilometres...

Get out into the wilderness and that would be really really cool!

Yep, high up in the mountains in summer so that the Milky Way is visible.
