Traveller-AR iPhone Game Confirmed + Video + Sweepstakes

Hello everyone!

I'm new to these forums, but not new to Traveller (I'm a big fan.). I wanted to let everyone know that the rumors of the Traveller AR MMORPG iPhone game are confirmed, and the game has been formally announced. Currently, there is a beta signup happening here:
http://www.traveller-ar.com/signup-for-beta/

In addition, there is a new Trailer video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U0xJDx_ROw

Finally, there is a cool Sweepstakes going on where you get to "Name an in-Game Star System" here:
http://karmaback.com/spend/prize/2011_03_23_15_54_04__157518150/

That is all. :)

I'll lurk here and be available to answer any questions (provided the forum admin is okay with it). I'll also periodically (not more than 1/month) post an update about the game as we move towards Beta and then launch. [again as long as the admin is okay].

Admin, if you prefer me to post elsewhere or have another suggestion, please email me, and I'll follow any rules you set forth.

My hope is that this iPhone game will spark renewed interest in the greatness that is Traveller!

p.s. WE ARE NOT A COMMUNIST PLOT! (I promise)

Was that the beowulf at the end? 'cos that was pretty cool...

One question: Is the ship combat like traveller combat, or is it pew pew lasers and spitfires in space?

p.s. WE ARE NOT A COMMUNIST PLOT! (I promise)

Well, as long as you promise... :)

Good luck with your game! I'm in the industry (I do consoles, not mobile) so I can imagine the excitement and pain you're going through right now. :)

Two questions: will it run on an iPod Touch, and do you have Android plans? I ask because my kid only has an iPod, and I have an Android device. :)

Ok, next time I'll watch the movie first:

It looks like you require a camera device (which rules out the iPod), and I suspect with the level of sophistication in your engine, you're not going to be cross-platform. (Wouldn't mind being proven wrong of course, lol.)

BTW, were you in Austin for SXSW, or are you based here?

hdan,

Those are the 2 most popular questions... and at the top of our FAQ:
http://www.traveller-ar.com/discussion-forum/developer-tips/official-developer-faq/

"The Summer 2011 release will only be for iDevices (e.g. iPhone, iPad, iTouch)."
Which means we are very much trying to make the game available on as many iDevices as possible (including your iPod Touch). Android is on our radar, but will be a decision after we launch the iDevices.
*Camera will not be required

barnest2,
Yep, that was the Beowulf & the traditional "mayday". Glad you liked it! (the guy in the video in the red shirt is me by the way).
NO PEW PEW LASERS in Space... it'll be real-time, but not fastest finger (more of a turn-based feel)... and we'll of course be fine-tuning it in our Beta.

I was at SXSW in Austin.. I live here too!

I didn't see any coverage from any of the major national Tech journalists that cover "i" stuff that were also at SXSW. Send me a PM if you'd like some help in that media relations area...

Just watched the video. VERY cool. I'm glad someone is finally taking our game into this medium.

That. Is. Awesome.

Hmmm. That seems really ambitious. I wonder how realistic it will be to get all those features in.

Got my email to beta test yesterday.
Now I have to get my commie friend to let me use his iPhone.

.

wink wink, nudge nudge, knowwutimean, sly dog you...

Comrade! Tovarisch!! <BIG BEAR HUG AND CHEEK KISSES>

If only I was not such a poor muzhik and had an iPad of my own :(

Even the commune can only afford a shared dPad which is not quite the same thing...

...in any case, best fortune on this! Maybe I'll get to see it on a friends' iPhone sometime. Speaking of which I should really drop a few notes with the link.

I'm disappointed that this won't be available on any other platform.

Unless, the company is extremely well funded they will have to port it for the product to be profitable.

Ambitious? Heck yah! But we've been working on this for quite some time, and have come a very long way! I think it's going to be a Stellar experience.

That said I want to clear up 2 things:
1.) we will eventually be supporting more platforms than just iPhone, iPad, and iTouch. the release this summer is only iDevices however.

2.) The Beta has not started yet. We do have a large group of people signed up as beta testers (you can still sign up here: http://www.traveller-ar.com/signup-for-beta/ ... and we sent 1 email to tell people that the Beta is getting closer (and to let them know about the Sweepstakes to name a Star System: http://www.traveller-ar.com/2011/03/23/name-a-system-sweepstakes-and-new-video/... but the Beta itself is not yet started.

Any chance this would ever be on Facebook? Some of us primitives have none of that fanciefied phone stuff. I have had my current cell phone for four years now.

Then there are those of us that don't have any sort of cell phone or Facebook...

There is this great pen & paper game for you all, it's called Traveller!
http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpg/series.php?qsSeries=51

Just kidding. Seriously though, any talk of other platforms beyond iDevices would be premature. (android/facebook/pc/mac/etc.).

Solomani666 is wrong that Android is a sure thing next year if things go well... he is right in that the iDevice launch needs to go well if we are to open up new platforms.

So, help us spread the word! We're trying to fill our Beta list as fast as we can to measure demand:
http://www.traveller-ar.com/signup-for-beta/

And I can say that it is going surprisingly well so far!

Just a quick update for ya'll... still time to enter the sweepstakes of course!

but the main thing I wanted to tell you was we got an iPad 2 in the office the other day!

Traveller AR looks freaking AWESOME on the iPad (native build)...

We'll be showing off the game at an upcoming Augmented Reality convention where our President is speaking.

if you were on the fence RE: getting an iPad... maybe this news will tip you over!
