Traveller 1001 Character Easter Eggs

lammomedes

Mongoose
Okay,
In the original 1001 Character book from GDW (Supplement 1), there were write-ups for Luke Skywalker, John Carter of Mars, for a total of nine "easter eggs." So how many are in the new Mongoose book?

With a casual glance through the book I found two so far, both in the children/juvenile section:
Bart Simpson and Newt from Aliens. Slightly different names, but even the abbreviated descriptions are clear clues as to who they are supposed to be.

Has anyone else found others?

"Samas" the "Military Darling". I really got a kick out of the idea/concept, and it wasn't too obvious until you made the connection with the name.

I'm finding every excuse to use her now. :D

I'll have to go back and look at the description because it doesn't ring a bell right away. But I am sure there are more than just these three...

Oh boy! Samus...er "Samas" is in the book!

Does she have her very own tailored battledress? Is it orange and red?

Oliver Kisst, the Orphan-Thief. I feel REALLY dumb for missing this the first time around (although I only skimmed the "Kids" section).

Alden Vorzek, the Would-be Warlord. I'm unsure whether this is a stand-in for, or inspired by Captain Kurtz, of Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now.

Kandle Hollybough, the Cult Leader, seems like the 3I's L. Ron Hubbard, 'nuff said.

Darius Arturo Doyle, Mad Scientist. My bet is a reference to the creator of the Cybermen or Cylons (can't remember the names ATM). This could just be "inspired by" rather than a deliberate reference, though.

Cybermen - The concept was invented by Gerry Davis and Dr Kit Pedler. In the Doctor Who setting, they were invented firstly on Mondas (a dying twin of Earth), and secondly by John Lumic of Cybus Industries on a parallel universe twin of Earth. The one with the Zeppelins.

Cylons - invented by Glen A Larson, who also gave us Quincy ME, and KITT, and Erin Grey wearing tight white Spandex.

Yes, BSG had an incarnation a generation before the one you all have come to know and love. They even had Patrick MacNee doing the voiceovers, which was cool as hell, despite the Seventies cheesiness.

Arturo Doyle is obviously influenced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author and creator of Sherlock Holmes.

I really need to get this book now. :)

There are a lot of names that are obviously taken from other places, but don't have any relation to the MGT character. There's a Tarquin, several Lamonts, a Bakersfield, a Vorhane, and MANY surnames of politicians. IMO they're not easter eggs unless they're done with a *wink* *nudge* to the reader (which is why I noted the ones I posted which I wasn't sure if they were easter eggs or "inspired by").

You do. It's so far my favourite supplement and suits my GMing style better than 760 Patrons. I've been using the two in conjunction with eachother really well, but if I could only pick one, I'd choose 1,001 Characters in a heartbeat.

Duke Enit Apalpa, the Duke of Aramanx. Useful or not, depending on your style of play, but there's a full page write-up that could easily be the basis of a campaign.

Enit Apalpa is (nearly) an anagram of Palpatine...

Who's the 1001st character? Or is that just a Picard-in-brocade bone to throw at the Trekkers among us?

Isn't he pointing out of the page at the reader, y'know, "You're the 1001st character"?

G.

Ooh. Cryptic.

So what'd happen if you opened the book so that page was facing a mirror? At least they'd both be 1001.

AND I'm aiming to go and get the book tomorrow.

I really wish I lived in a town with an FLGS, instead of having to travel to get my stuff.

Please tell me that Ditzie has made an appearance in the book...

...That is the single most obnoxious character I have seen in my life. It's a little shocking to read a description of a fictional seven-year-old girl and feel a wave of hatred roll over you, the likes of which is reserved for malevolent dictators and people who write bad Latin.

I get the story behind it and no hate to person who created it, but it boggles my mind that people could like reading about something like that.
