Transport

I've been playing ACTA for a while, but only recently began aquiring mini's. I've come up with a few options for transporting them myself, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask around. Anyone have any suggestions?

GW carry cases if you don't mind spending the cash. Tool-box and some foam sheets cut to size is a bit cheaper.

If you're in IT then a few spare Hard Drive boxes (the ones with eggshell foam in) are perfect. Depending on your fleet, you can fit your 5pt Raid fleet into one.

the best i found come from maplins, they are aluminium flight boxes with 4 inch black foam inside which is cut into small squares so you can pick em out.
youre models are nice and safe in the foam (which if you get it cut you can have 2 layers) and the box keeps em safe, only £15 at the moment

nest of 3 cases from B+Q, £9.99, the small one is ideal for a small raid fleet, the large one, once all foamed up can contain a decent sized battle fleet

Sheets of foam about 5 inches thick with 4 inch deep holes carved out with a scalpal. A scalpal is just about the best think I've found for cutting soft foam, but watch your fingers, or it becomes soft red foam.

For something completely different, use magnetic basing. GF9 makes round magnetic bases in various sizes, glue those to the bottom of the flight base. Find a container (I use some long tupperware things that I picked up at the local Wally world) glue some GF9 Steel sheets to the bottom and pop em in. They minis do NOT slide around or bump each other at all, and even with having to buy the magnetic stuff, still ends up being cheaper than buying a dedicated minis case.

Ill second that, drive boxes are fantastic :)

Another type of IT box that works great are Cisco router card boxes. They are heavy duty and egg shell foam on the top and bottom and foam around the sides.

I grab them when ever I see them.

I use a dedicated minis case.
Don't know who makes it, but it runs between $40 and $50 US depending on where you get it.
If I describe it, you'll know what I am talking about the moment you see it, so here goes:

It's big and black.
2 small pockets in the front with velcro closures (great for dice, pens, pencils, erasers, etc)
1 large, zipper pocket just behind the small ones,
and the BIG zipper pocket for holding the minis.
Carry strap.

Inside the Big pocket are soft, foam, well, Boards, I guess you can call them. About an inch and a half thick, 8 inches wide and a little over a foot long.
The great thing about them is that, while the edges and bottoms are pretty solid, the main part of the foam is already cut most of the way through -- Perforated, if you will -- into little squares about a quarter inch to a side and an inch deep. So you can easily and quickly remove just enough of those pieces to fit whatever you want to fit into that slot.

Makes it possible to carry you ACTA fleets (lots of ships), your CBT models (I have 3 companies in the first 4 layers), and still have room for a couple more things...
It really is worth the money and you have to see it to understand why I sing its praises so much. Wish I could remember the maker...

what you're describing is an army transport case, by Sabol designs. They come in a variety of sizes. Sold at most better gaming stores

I use the foam trays and then cut them into removable "brick" sections (which you can then mix and match before leaving for your game) cut out around the model on each half of a brick and it becomes a protective clamshell for your minis. works for one big ship (omega) 2 medium ships (hyperions, old olympus) or 3 small ships (chronos, white stars)
I let the base stick out the bottom so your base size may be limiting.

longer or wider models may not work as efficiently but they are very protected.
