Time to bitch about the non-colour 2nd edition

I just downloaded the new CONAN adventure in the latest S&P - and there ist is! The background and the sides of the pages all in colour! Beautiful!

And what do we got: Stupid black and white shit that really does not plea the eye ...

Mongoosians: Never do that again! Never! This is a command! Charge me an extra 10 but give me the top-notch binding back and the all-colour books.

BTW - Same for RQ Slaine. Okay, it is nice to have a competition for an all colour book with a kick-ass front (the one the copy that is on sale ha sis ... okay), but I for one would have BOUGHT one!

I think the layout of the new corebook looks more like the softcover supplements than the old corebook did. Perhaps we should have bitched sooner. For the record: I am colourblind.

I feel the rules are the most important thing--not the art direction.
I too am colourblind but think there has been too much whining about colour and artwork. Would Vallejo and Frazetta art be good in a Conan RPG book? Certainly! But I don't think too many people would be willing to shell out an EXTRA 30 USD for it. Not I!

I'm inclined to agree. I'd rather pay less for B/W myself. Art and picturework are not the content I'm paying for. I want the game material, and that is all.

I personaly would have paid an extra tenner for an all colour 2nd Edition Conan core book printed and bound to the same standard as the old 1st Edition one! (Not that I have any real issues with my new 2nd Edition book, its just that my old one looks and feels nicer...)

I personally dont mind the B&W art. I think the Conan art looks good without color, it gives it a better mood (and a lot of art looks funny in color).

Keeping the cost down and having it a big fat book is another big plus, as most of us cant afford a $60+ rulebook (and for vary good reason).

I'd gladly pay $60 for Conan in full color.

I have to agree. My copy arrived yesterday and I opened it up and ... was immediately disappointed with the lack of color. Haven't had a chance to read through it, but first impression wasn't very good. I'm sure the game content is great, as I wouldn't expect anything less from Mongoose, but I was hoping for color.

Blah! I am not color blind or anything but for me it is easier to read B/W text. I like good art, though and I have to say that some of the art that was copied from previous editions (and are now in B/W) has suffered somewhat. For me the point of good art is that it pleases the eye and creates the atmosphere.

2e is a hefty book and by dropping the colors has also dropped the price considerably so I'm not complaining. What is worrying is that if the binding (or however it is done) doesn't hold then it is broken.

I don't really mind about the coulour (as long as it makes me save a few bucks), but I find the printing of the 2nd Ed rather dark, making some tables or greyed areas barely readable.
It really costs a lot of money to print a coulour book. Now, we got more pages for less money. I think we should be glad about that. Of course, there's still that binding problem...

I am new to this forum, but not new to Howard or RPGs. I became very interested in the Conan line of product after becoming more and more disillusioned with what was happening to my beloved D&D. I much prefer the low-magic, mature themed, gritty feel of Conan.

After reading a great deal of the more recent boards, I intended to purchase the product and get started. Then, I saw 2nd ed was coming around, so I waited. After seeing that 2nd ed was not color, I decided that the Atlantean ed would be a better buy.

Problem is, no one appears to sell the Atlantean ed anymore. 'Sigh' I would gladly buy the 2nd ed if it contained masterful color artwork.

I apologize, but artwork holds a special place for me in gaming. I love the old sword and sorcery masters. I think artwork does alot to define the feel of the gaming universe in which you play. That is another reason why I have left D&D. I hate the lame anime/final fantasy video game inspired BS. It is done in an attempt to appeal at younger gamers and create some riduculous politically correct universe. Really, what sword and sorcery would has all races living in harmony without sexism, slavery, etc.??? (But, that is an entirely different rant).

So, where does this leave me? Currently, no where. Because I can't buy the Atlantean and won't buy the 2nd ed unless it is in color. I would very much like to get involved with this product line. Hopefully, I am not the only individual who feels this way.

Mongoose, please consider offering alternate color editions to your works. You will gain at least one devoted purchaser.

Let me ask all: are there troubles with the 2e binding? Over in the Lone Wolf forum lots of folks are upset about poor binding and their copies are coming apart from only a little use.

Same here. But I do agree to the "B&W art also looks nice" - IF the art was B &W in the first place, in the original form.

Then it can easily beat a full colour edition.

But a lot of times full colour pictures and illustrations are much too dark - you really can't see a thing (problem with the RQ Slaine edition - full color pictures from comics copied and turned into black and white ... blobs).

So, please: Get the artist zu do bw-originals or go full colour again. Or at least - if that makes any sense businesswise - give the buyers an option to get a full colour edition.

Yes, the rules are the same. I can gae with either. But a nice rule-book, a geogeous illustration, an inspiring eye-candy-map does a lot to make me want to go adventuring in my favourite fantasy world.

Hello everyone. Im new to the Mongoose forum so be gentle. I have loved Robert E. Howards Conan stories ever since I first read them in my early teens. I also like to roleplay so there is my reason for being here.

The post delivered my 2e rulebook yesterday. I used it for the first time earlier today when we created a new character for my friend.

Guess what happened... a page fell of right from the middle. Others pages seem to be loosening up also. Got to say that the second edition has crappy binding. Im pretty pissed off. The rules are good though so no problem there.

Thank you, Der Rote. I also agree with your statement concerning original B&W art. It can be very compelling and certainly has its place.

As a side note to Bolen, it can be color or colour. I believe it is entirely based upon dialect and the norm for regional English. To my knowledge, no one has dictated the "proper" version. (Like those who felt it would be PC to change all generic pronoun usage to "she" rather than the traditional "he." Ridiculous . . . )

AND if I am wrong and there was a conclusive decision by the individual in charge of the english language, I say continue to do what you will and do not coform what HE dictates.
