Given Thunderbolts are atmospheric capable how's that a problem..?

That's fine - it's not like those bits actually provide lift

The first time we see T'bolts in Season 3, when they are bombing that dome, they have wings ectended. when Joohnny 'Nuke'em' Sheridan gets tested out on them we see theme xtend the wings as they enter the atmosphere.

however, it is possible, as with existing modern variable wing fighters, that the wings need not be extended in all flight conditions.
