Thoughts on Mongoose Elric...

Loved Richard Watts old Chaosium Atlas of the Northern Continent.
Now that MM is back penning Young Kingdom's stories I can imagine the trepedation in publishing a similar volume. A single new short story can , and has, suddenly add new cities or countries to Elric's world.

I have the new edition and most of the old ones (probably buy the new D100 rules set) too and as usual take the bits I like and ignore the bits I don't.

For instance I like the GW edition magic rules, the Elric Influence scores, the old weapon mastery weapon skills (although I also give a basic weapons percentage chance with set modifiers in damage /skill for using 2HD, Defensively and all out attack. I ike the armour scores being random but not hit lcoations.

One of the big things I like about D100 system - nice and easy to make good mods to it and customise.

I enjoyed the MGP products I have - Elric, Hawkmoon, Bright Shadows (a good and enjoyable version of the "Melnibone" supplement) - I would prefer more colour - the GW edition had some lovely colour plates and good interior art.

re art, I see NO excuse for the bad art that still appears in products of any company - given the artwork one can find for free and whose artists are willing to let you use - see illustrations in my ACTA sourcebook for lovely examples............

Good post- I think my favourite version is still the original box set - I really liked the regional attribute modifiers whiched helped make the characters a little more individual. Although the magic rules tended to make magic using characters uber warriors too, it did at least reflect the stories...

I like the Mongoose version though- the presentation just lets it down a bit

One thing I really miss in the Mongoose version is not having the generic NPC character stats for thugs, pirates, etc seen in the last few versions of the game- it's a real time saver to have these stats without doing it yourself.

Charles Green produced a set of these which were published in a recent Signs and Portents - can't remember which issue. If you trawl through the back catalogue (free to download from the Mongoose main site) you should find the article, along with a few other Elric and Hawkmoon bits and pieces.
