Should we make a rulebook that current players of BF Evo do not need in order to a) keep on playing (which, of course, they already have) and b) to play with new units, or should we do everything we can to make the game the best we can, based on feedback we have received over the past year?
I'd rather see the rules change than the minis. The rules are a much lower investment of $.
I won’t mention rules changes, because those have been mentioned elsewhere. But as far as distribution/presentation of the game, the following is what I'd like to see/recommend:
-Generic basic ruleset PDF = free
-PDF of advanced rules = c. $5-$10, which is realistically the rough profit margin if it were in print.
-Print version of the advanced rules = <=$25; print version includes a free PDF of the book. Regardless of the PDF availability, there is no comparison to a paper copy.
-Updates to the rules via errata publishing in S&P and also in a separate downloadable PDF. Preferably the updates would be on a quarterly, bi-annual or annual basis rather than monthly (unless something is blatantly wrong). This keeps players from getting insanely frustrated if they don't keep up with the latest rules. I'd also strongly recommend a mailing list of some sort be set up to allow players to receive an alert of the new updates. If you build it, they will not come… unless you tell them it exists.
-1 PDF of all factions in a single document
-1 PDF of each factions for those suffering on dialup (low priority/optional)
-Make sure these documents are not only aesthetically pleasing, but printer friendly and readable after printing in greyscale
-Break the mold on the old concepts of playtesting. I would recommend getting all unit stats out ASAP but marked as “beta” and allow the community to play with them and try to playtest/break them/point out the flaws/good stuff. The beta lets the community know they are works in progress so it should minimize some of the typical ranting and raving. Specifically ask for and compile feedback via a single forum thread per unit to use in developing the official unit stats at the point of the mini’s release.
-Organize releases to be balanced in terms of function as much as possible for the initial releases. i.e. all factions get their infantry/tanks/AA units/Command Squads/Snipers at the same time. This keeps one faction from gaining an unfair advantage over the other.
-Implement 1 distinct faction bonuses for ALL factions in the main rulebook. In time, offer faction specific books/pdfs that offer 2 alternate/specific “sublists” of troops and supplemental bonuses.
-Do not mix units in a single boxed set unless they are units that are needed en masse. Issues with Command Squads that are unique and replicated units have been frustrating.
-Mount the leaders or special units in a squad on different color bases or make them a distinct enough pose to know the difference.
