There is something wrong with the vehicles

mbtanker

Mongoose
Check out these two photos. Something is very off with the BE vehicle miniatures. Artistic license is fine but I think this is what makes them look out of scale with the troops. Notice how 'squished' the miniature is compared to the real thing. Also notice how the CITV takes up the entire left front of the turret but on the real tank it is a good 18-24" back from the front of the turret and has more room to the left of it as well. Also the gunner's site housing should be about 12" deep. On the mini it barely has any depth at all.

Good point Sarge. Plus, for those of us who know next to nothing about the military (nevermind what exactly a CITV is :? ...), the Mongoose minis look pretty good. :D

Remember, these models are from a decade in the future. Who knows what kind of changes will be made?

LOL, knowing the increasingly frustrating procurement practices currently taking hold in the various militaries of the West - probably none :)

Well I don't want to beat this topic to death because the M1 is certainly the worst of the lot as far as physical oddities go although I still don't understand why Mongoose chose a scale difference between the vehicles and figures (or at least it looks off) and why they have oddities in the various designs. These are all real vehicles and we know what they look like and what size they are. If one wants to make pretend vehicles then let's call this a sci-fi game, move it 25 years into the future and be done with the issue. I understand those with less knowledge of modern weapon systems are not going to be bothered by many of these issues but others will be. Why not get the proportions reasonably correct? Or at the very least why not make the same proportional adjusts to each vehicle?

But having said that the issues with the M1 miniature cannot be explained by 'ten years' of future development. Ten years only got us from the M1A1 to the M1A2. Upgrades will not make the tank smaller that would be a different tank. The Abrams has changed little in its physical appearance since its inception even after two major upgrades.

My wife thinks the F15 and F18 look the same. That doesn't mean Mongoose should just use the same miniature for both.

Scale's not so bad. I know from experience the Chinese tank is low profile and sits about that high. As for the Abrams, take a look at these comparisons:

As you can see from the pictures, the average soldier is just barely taller than the highest point on the Abrams' main chassis. Look closely at the first picture, and you'll see this is true of the miniatures as well.

Many photos are taken in such a way as to make the tank look bigger than it actually is. The last photo makes the tank look taller because the barrel is raised. Most posed photographs have soldiers kneeling or sitting down on top of the tank. Remember, the Abrams was designed to have a low profile so it could fit in shallower positions, making it easier to prepare defenses against the Russians.

That last photo is very telling. If that last guy on the left were standing on a milk crate(i.e. based) he would be at the same level as the tank.

Whether or not the tanks are precisely to scale or not doesn't really concern me. They look close enough to me.

I am more concerned with how the game will play and whether it will be fun or not.

I'd honestly need to see the miniatures in person to make a final call, but I'm standing by my statement for the moment, Shotgun.

Agreed, night owl. If the game is fun, I really don't care if the tank is a little smaller than it should be. As long as it blows stuff up before it get blown up itself, that's all I care about. :D

I'm not saying our research is extensive but for the Toyota Hilux technical I visited my brother-in-law who has one and we did photographic tests standing against it to confirm height.

I wanted to do this with the Type 99 MBT as well but that turned out to be trickier, as my brother-in-law doesn't have one.

Hey! I've got a t-99. You guys are welcome to...oh wait, it's just my nieghboor's H2. Sorry for the confusion!

Seriously, no offense to anyone, but this is getting a little silly. They're just models, and IMO they look fine. I know of very few wargames of this scale that have vehicles which are perfectly scaled to the minis. In this case I think they're close enough (having never been on, in, near, or around a real tank I'm not exactly an authority anyway), and if the game is fun that's all that really matters.

I agree, anyone looking for 100% accuracy to real life or to their favoured vision of near-future warfare is really missing the point of the game. It's meant to be fun first, simulation second.

It's going to have a fast moving, simple rules set designed to give you a fast and enjoyable game or two per session.
