The Worker Class

This is more a B5 GM question, but I'd welcome player input also.

What, if anything, have you done to make the Worker class more attractive to players?

Have you modified it in anyway, or provided any benefits beyond those listed in the book?

The Second Edition Babylon 5 Worker Class.

The one that breaks down into Blue Collar, White Collar and Performer.

Well a common Joe 6 pack, pushin a broom worker, might have some very good use in a mission or objective IF he and or she has contacts in the underworld that might be of use OR some kind of personal hobby skill that would be of use. Such otherwise overlooked attribute might become a very important thing in the details of a project or mission.

For example lets say that a mission needed a radioman but the military people would stick out like a sore thumb--because they are toooooo diciplened. A janator who just pushed a broom having a say ham radio hobby would be an invaluable asset as an acting radio man when no one is looking.

OR say a mission required some land travel. Joe the latrine clean up person just happens to have a hobby of studying and memorizing maps and geography features thus making him a walking map for the project.

THINK along the lines of hmmm like the Preacher in Firefly. His uncanny knoledge of things that a preacher should not know about weaponry and the workings of Black Ops was a considerable aid to the crew of Serenity more than once.

OR remember in Willow, the movie, how that dumb vanishing pig trick was used to save the princess. A stupid trick saved the day.

Focus on the little normal viewed as useless thing and bring it onto the spotlight.

Sometimes its the tiny things that add spice to the story line--like the tiny err almost full grown red dragon that just happened to pop up last week in our D & D Game. Talk about addin spice....OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH RUN RUN.

PS We killed the dragon but it was almost a party RIP....

The character might indeed have something to offer it was designed that way.

However, when compared to other PC class options, the Worker class lacks a lot of options.

They excel at one thing, and one thing only, their direct job.

One thing I was considering doing was giveing them the Hobby feat in the early levels for something else they do well, and Skill Focus at later levels for that Hobby feat skill.

I'm in the process of doing a true20 port for my own private use, and find that yes, nearly all of the classes' features are simply feats. Worker fits nicely with Agent, Diplomat, Scientist, Trader, and Lurker in the Expert role*, and can be customized to function very easily in that system.

*for the sake of completeness, Officer, Ranger, and Soldier use Warrior, and Telepath & Technomage use Adept.
