The Spider God's Bride - PDF and Offer!

Mixed feelings on this one.
The lack of a map of the setting is irritating. Yes, I know I can download one off the Xoth site but I had hoped that Mongoose would have it redrawn to look a bit better.
I am not sure why all the magic was done as common magic rather than sorcery.
Maybe it's just that I waited so long for it but I had a feeling of "is that it?" when I looked it over.

The lack of revised maps is a real disappointment, I concur, but xoth.net does offer maps of Xoth and sites of SBG for free. Two adventures written for Pathfinder now await an apparent demand for Legend conversion. And quite possibly Mr Braten would produce a Xoth sourcebook should he be formally asked. Maybe Mongoose should do that.

You can download lots of maps for the Spider Gods Bride here http://xoth.net/publishing/xp1/index.htm#support
I will speak frankly here because I have been waiting for and anticipating this product for so long now... that is piss poor to say the very least.

I understand your frustration and to a point I can agree. But you must remember, this is not a complete CAMPAIGN SETTING book. It is a collection of adventures for gamers who prefer S&S over 'Epic/High Fantasy' with some additional rules thrown in to add flavour.

You must also remember that every piece of artwork, be it cartography or illustration, adds to the price.

Also, have you considered the possibility that the Xoth map was not part of the deal Marten did with Matt? In which case, the lack of a map cannot be held against MP.

Looks like I might have to develop a Swords and Sorcery world from one of my short stories and perhaps put it on Legend.

Quite right. When the book came to me it had also been through several other writers. In many cases I had to tear down what was there and rebuild it - there were no maps at all though, none. I think Matt will tell you it had a long history and almost a curse on it.

I like to think I was crazy enough to brave that curse and finish the book in the end.

I usually like to do system-agnostic things, letting the GM fill in the stat gaps. One of the reasons I really liked the Sommerlund book - there wasn't a single rule in there and it was all setting information the GM can use to bring Sommerlund to life.

This is true. Also, we had a real problem keeping the size of this book (and its cost) down. We desperately tgried to keep it to the $19.99 digest format (and failed!), but wanted to at least keepo it from spiralling up to a $40 hardback.

At the end of the day, it is and always has been a collection of adventures. Whether we shall see more for it... well, let's wait and see what happens!

What a tease.

The maps issue is easily solved via xoth.net, so no real harm done. Probably a prudent move in terms of keeping costs down.

I noticed yesterday when I bought SGB at rpgnow drivethru it was already ranked as the 5th "Hottest Item", although as I type it's slipped to 7th. Is it selling well enough to warrant a follow-up campaign guide?

I've been to Xoth.net; there are two additional scenario books. At the risk of the curse of Aklathu, can we get those books converted?

Looking at that right now :)

That would be awesome. I think Legend needs a couple of strong adventures that show off the strengths of the system and help to differentiate it from the generic D&D fantasy.

Incidentally, I'd love to see a series of sourcebooks that provide additional rules on how to tweak the Legend system for use with different styles of fantasy - Swords and Sorcery, High Fantasy, Gothic Horror / Dark Fantasy, Swashbuckling Adventure, Steampunk, Grim and Gritty, Dungeon Crawling, Paranormal Romance (!), etc. I reckon that between the introductory material from Spider God's Bride and Lankhmar Unleashed, you've already got the beginnings of a book on how to run a Swords & Sorcery campaign with the Legend System - you could also pillage some ideas from your old d20 Conan back catalogue (filing off the serial numbers, of course).

This sounds promising.

Morten Braten has done some sterling work with his Xoth material, but he is tending towards Pathfinder rules. While the void left by the demise of Conan d20 is potentially filled by Xoth, PFRPG rules feel a bit Back-to-the-Future )when Legend feels pretty right for the genre). Especially given the licence was lost over an attempt to shift from d20 to RQ II...

Legend Xoth is essentially a defacto RQ Conan, or at least it's bastard son, born on the battlefield. I've been waiting for this for years.

Regarding the maps; I get there is no world map, which is a shame - it would have been very handy - however are the encounter maps included and updated from the hand drawn ones on Xoth.net? As a cartographer, Morten makes an excellent writer!

I think that concentrating on swords and sorcery adventure helps to differentiate Legend from the generic fantasy settings - which tends to be strongly associated with D&D / Pathfinder in the minds of most gamers. And it also plays to the strengths of the game system, which tends to have a more gritty feel. I strongly recommend going back to the original pulp fantasy source material for inspiration and guidance whenever possible - not just the works of Robert E. Howard, but also H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Fritz Leiber, Michael Moorcock, et al.

All updated, and rather nice they look too, if I say so myself!

I haven't seen this conversion yet but the original has 40 pages of campaign setting and the adventures themselves contain bits of the setting, it's not especially voluminous but I think SGB already has a decent amount of campaign material embedded.

I would be interested in hearing about how magic was converted if anyone has a copy.
