The Return of Twilight 2000?

We have also started to discuss the return of Twilight 2000 (likely with another date in mind for it, for obvious reasons), based on a completely different Third World War. However, this is unlikely to appear in 2011, so check back in a year’s time!

Personally, I'd like to see the original gritty setting envisioned in the 1980s intact. It could work out as an alternate timeline/history. Look at the world of Fallout, you've got a world where the 1950s never ended and we get a pretty interesting and unique post-apoc future out of it. So why not do the same with TW2K? Except in this case the world that ended resembles the late 80s and 90s in which the Cold War went hot.

Also, it would be nice to see this turn into a miniatures game instead. Hell, it would make perfect sense to make this into a minis game. Besides, someone else already "ressurected" TW2K and turned it into something called Twilight 2013. And guess what? That version does not have the original cold war gone hot setting intact. If Mongoose is going ahead with this liscense, I think they should distance themselves from the 2013 version as much as possible by staying true to the original setting, and maybe not bringing it back as an RPG.

Anyways, that's just my 2 cents on this, what does everyone else think?

I agree with this. Picking a specific retro vibe and going with it would be cooler than trying to update it. Fallout and any number of video games (Bioshock) have traded successfully on that.

I concur with the idea of an alternate reality type setting. You could make an entire genere of RPG/minature games with it.

Plus doing a Minature set of rules with Twilight 2000 would definately be a big plus.

Have section that gives the rules for Micro/15mm/25m and possibly larger would help the game alot.
(larger would allow those kids with their GI Joes/Green Army men to learn how to play. ;)

I was a long time Twilight 2000/Merc 2000 fan but I've stayed well clear of Twighlight 2013, but I'd be up for a cold war goes hot alternate history game.

What put most of the people I was invloved with off Twilight 2000 was the combat rules - just too slow for a role playing game.

One of the campaigns I ran was actually set in the early 80's.

Yep, and I think most gamers today would rather "play" with miniatures to represent a fire fight than roleplay a fire fight.

The idea of seeing a new version of Twilight 2000 has myself and my group pretty excited. We loved the original and would enjoy an updated version for sure. We did try 2013 when it came out, but the system didn't work for us, so we abandoned it early on.

To go against the grain of some others in this thread, sorry :) , but the one thing which would put my group off is if it was a miniatures game. We are die hard role-players who never really liked using miniatures or the likes in combat. I appreciate that is just our own preference, but I felt I should say it where it can be seen.

Yeah it bugged me they never finished the tier 3 rules they promised before it came out. Seemed all they did once the main book was out, was just crank out new books full of guns. I thought the rules was ok, in that it worked for a game based on survival to have a ultra "realistic" game. I would have liked them to have done tier 3 rules and then moved on to region books and military books. To give people help on running it.

Ah well, it sounds like they are losing the license and Mongoose will be getting it. If so I hope they do a better job with it.

The one thing that was awesome about TW2K were the old campaign books chock full of fluff and illustrations.

I would be keen to see this for sure, going back to the Cold War is the way to go for sure (just not sure if my budget would allow for a new game though, and that's both in 'time' and 'money'

I'd like a slightly modified 1e T2k. Great game, that just needed a few tweaks to be perfect.

Also, I really support the idea of starting it back in the past, especially the 80's, as it was originally done. If you do, make some 80's stuff really stand out, whether it be fashion, computers, or music.

As someone who has all the old Twilight:2000 materials (or at least, most of it) plus the new Twilight:2013 printed materials, I am willing to cut the latter version a bit of slack. I really liked the old version and tried it out for a while, unfortunately my group really could not get into it (too much into superheroes and fantasy IIRC). I bought the new version (and hope to finish reading it when I get the chance), and believe some of the criticism it has received is more than it deserves.

The original TW2000 was put out by a group of several people in a relatively small company...TW2013 was pretty much put out by a lone individual with some help from volunteers IIRC who did not have the resources the original game had. I also do not blame him for trying to update the game for more modern audiences in terms of background as it is a different world now. As for game mechanics, I learned a long time ago not to debate the merits of system A vs system B as everyone has their own preferences for what they like and dislike, and consider such debates as pointless and just devolve into "flame wars."

About a year ago I got to play a one-shot TW2k under a good GM who bought the physical book from FFE. He did a great job and it brought me back (I picked up the original box set the day it hit my local store).

It was fast, fun, gritty, and filled with tension. I miss it.

Yes very gritty thats what its all about. I want to feel like Im standing in the hot sun sweating, while waiting for the enemy to come down the road so We can ambush them and capture the supplies from the convoy.

This golden oldie is getting a reboot by Free League and it's going to hit stores soon. Just in time for 2300 AD to hit, too, I guess. :D
