The Next Generation (no, not Trek)

Mongoose
So I've been slowly introducing my 9yo to Traveller. He's a big fan of scifi and space science, so I had him roll up a Scout service explorer for his first character. He got lots of science and computer skills, as well as a few of the more "practical" skills (LOL), so he's happy.

I also hooked him up with travellermap.com and showed him the basic layout of the 'marches and "the claw".

He then proceeded to dig around in the claw until he found the J-5 route through the Riftspan Sector, and wanted to design a J-5 ship to traverse it. We broke out a notepad and started working on the smallest practical ship for that trip.

Hook, line and sinker. :)

He has also shown an interest in (real world) economics, so I'm considering a very RP-lite trade campaign with him. We'll roll up a crew and get a ship (Far Trader or maybe a custom built 400 ton exploratory trader or something), and strike out into the heart of this subsector I've been working on, looking for profits.

(Towards that end, does anyone have a really good cargo manifest/balance sheet type thing that I can use to track the cargo as I buy and sell it? Sure it wouldn't be hard to make one, but I'm not too proud to steal, I mean take advantage of other people's hard work.)

I'll drive it completely by random tables (space ship encounters, trade, etc.) to see if we can make money on the fringes of known space. I'm expecting some space combat after he can afford some weapons, and I'm looking forward to seeing how well an essentially GM-less campaign goes. (Thinking of drafting the Mythic plot system to supply some adventure if things get too dry or arbitrary.)

I do have him, my 6yo girl and my wife starting a more traditional story driven campaign, but my 6yo is still a bit young for that one and is resisting playing more scenarios. (She's happy enough playing miniature games like Chain Reaction but she says she finds "talky" games too hard to understand what's going on. To be honest, I was very proud of her being able to articulate that to me so succinctly, even though it made me a little sad that I'd have to scale back on my Family Traveller Night plans for now.)

It's taken on a life of its own here. I should probably scale back but it's too much fun:

We actually started off trading but I had to do all the math and recording: *NO THANKS*.

We have a campaign about two drifters that's been going on a while. We also have a quick nightly campaign about some scruffy scavengers. Then there's a big one every two weeks now about rogues in District 268. On top of that, I'm going to start a toned-down 3:16 campaign Thursday. All for kids 12 and under, except for one game where one of them participates with the adults from time to time.

Anyways, yes, best wishes and all that :)
