Tales of the Black Kingdom

The Warlord

I see it's not a Quilliams cover. Like previously stated, it's nice to have one artist to tie the line together. That said, I very much approve the cover artist of the Black Kingdoms book. Whoever he is did an outstanding job!

Very powerful image, and makes me want to create a Kushite Barbarian! :)

I think the style alone marks it as not being from Quilliams. His work is a bit grittier, and grounded in a more natural color palette, and he's not commonly used the misty, ethereal background for images before.

If Mr. Berquist is reading this, did you write all the adventures yourself? It sounds like a great adventure sourcebook.

Well, I am reading this, at last! Yes, I wrote the adventures in "Tales," and had a great time doing it. The first tale is set in Kush, and deals with a mystery surrounding the cult of Jullah. The second tale involves the little-explored land of Atlaia, referenced briefly by Howard and ignored by most all other Conan authors since. The third tale heads even further south to deal with slavers and the lands of the Wadai. Each scenario works in sync to create one extended campaign. I also provided some material for Messantia Adventures, to appear (last I heard) in Books 2 and 3.

Thanks guys! That's definently nice to hear, I was a bit paranoid about the piece as there have been some big names render the world of Conan.

I'm glad I didn't let you down :)

Yeah, I have to agree. That cover is absolutely amazing, and thematically perfect for the campaign.

Question: what level range are we talking about for the PC here?

In other words, can lvl 1 characters start with your Kush adventure or do they have to be higher level to stand a chance?

Hi, another late response. The Tales are meant for lower level characters; you could probably start with some 2nd-3rd level types just fine in a normal group of 4-6 players; I'd maybe run a "prequel" scenario or two to get some 1st level PCs up to snuff for this one; but PCs starting at 2nd ought to make it to 5th or even 6th by the final Tale. The scenario is also quite scalable, although smart PCs will always avoid battling the more diabolical entities!
