T5?

As far as I know, T5 from Far Future Enterprises has been announced to
become published in July, but I would not hold my breath, as the dead-
line has already been changed several times before.

T5 is NOT currently set to release in July. It is somewhat in a beta version that is being play-tested by a small group of MM's select plus those that have pre-ordered. I don't see a CD release for many moons. Book? Don't think even MM has an idea.

"We are pleased to announce the pending publication of the preliminary edition of Traveller5 in CD ROM/ PDF format. This CD-ROM contains: the initial files for Traveller5 -- the fifth edition of Traveller. Each image and text PDF contains original page images and searchable text. All files are printable in whole or in part. Spreadsheets are Microsoft Excel format.
We plan to ship on or before mid-July (this date has been pushed back several times; we regard July 15 as a final date). But pre-order now and we'll ship as soon as this CDROM is ready."

This is what is on Far Future Enterprises' website. Seems that I somehow
misunderstood it :?:

You did not misunderstand. The website is very clear. Sturn is just being honest about the reality of T5, it is one of those forever in development projects. Do you know how many times the web site has given dates or Marc has given dates? Even though some say it is in "play test" I still think of it as not real. That way when it does come out I will be happy but for now I am not disapointed.

The website information is old and has not been updated for some time.

The CD version was going to be released, then the decision was made to playtest it instead. The large amount of material that was going to be released early on CD is instead being reviewed, tested, etc with no mention of when the CD let alone the book will be released.

It's NOT going to be released July 15th. Just my personal guess, but it will be months if not a year before the CD is shipped. The up-to-date info is that no date has been set and someone should really update the website to reflect this.

I would comment further on what has been covered and not covered during the reviews and thus updates of the material, but fear I'm not supposed to.

Thanks for the updates.

I have really enjoyed Mongoose's version*. I guess I was kinda' hoping that T5 had been folded into this one. At this point, I guess all you can say is "more, the merrier when it comes to versions of Traveller...

*(BTW, what's the acronym?)

Typically, MGT, MgT, MoTrav, or RTT.

RTT from Ricki-Ticki-Traveller.

Thank you very much for the information ! :D

I trusted the website and wanted to pre-order the CD-ROM at the beginning of July ...

I would advise against pre-ordering T5, if only because it's so unclear as to when you'd actually be getting a final product. It's much better to wait for it to actually come out in its final form (if it ever does - as the site says what's coming out "soon" isn't even the full version of it). I'm not even sure that you wouldn't have to pay again for a final print verson either (again, assuming that ever happens).

Meanwhile, you have MGT if you want a Traveller fix, and new stuff is definitely coming for that.

T5 and MongTrav are entirely different things. My understanding is that the T5 version that is intended for release* on July 15th is in fact a Beta version which will eventually be used as the basis of a final release at some point in the future.

*T5 has already had several 'final' release dates and seems to keep slipping; perhaps July 15th really will happen and perhaps not. In any case, even then it will be a beta version and not the final release.

Yep. When I pre-ordered in late 2007, the website said the "final" release date would be January 31.

What a laugh.

I later found that this was only the latest of several "final" release dates from 2007, and, since then, there have been several more "final" release dates for 2008.

I think it will probably come out ... "real soon now" as they say in the vapour... er, software industry ... but I would, based on the repeated failures to adhere to any promised release date ... specified by MM himself, mind ... be unwilling to believe that that date will be in 2008 ...

Unless and until I have an actual copy of the CD in my hot little hands.

And as for a print version ...

I didn't mean to make folks think T5 is not going to be released. From what I have seen, there is a huge amount of material completed, just not in a form that is ready for print.

I truly believe it will be released as a CD in the not too distance future. It was oh so close to being shipped a few months ago, but a wise decision was made to delay the CD release to work on the content. The final CD will be much better for it.

As for a print copy? I don't want to guess on when it will be released. If you are waiting for it to be released soon, don't. Grab a copy of MGT instead. Tons of material coming your way.

Having watched the T5 date slip from 2005, to 2006, to 2007, and on to 2008....

... I'm curious, but not curious enough to prepay.

The problem with RTT is that its more of an inside joke from those that didn't want to accept the possibility that Mongoose's version could possibly be a quality version of the game. Those fears have long since been silenced, but some among the original crowd still call it that.

There was a thread on RPG.net not long ago where the title of the thread included "Ricki-Ticki-Traveller" no one responded, except me. Only reason I happened to notice the thread was because I did a search for "Traveller" on the page. Despite the OP asking a serious question, it was hard to take it seriously when the OP was referring to the version by its joke name, and my response said as much.

MGT is the one I've seen Mongoose people using most commonly.

Well, I like RTT because MGT makes me think MeGaTraveller, probably my least favorite version of the game. But, I don't want to offend the designers so I will live with it.

While I am looking forward to some official errata, this version is my favorite so far.

Now, if I could just get my Tuesday Night Group to go along.

I hate the "RTT" term myself. Like dmcoy, I've always seen it used as an in-joke on CotI, and rarely with a positive intent. Plus, nobody who isn't in on the "joke" is going to have a clue what it means.

That's why I prefer to use MoTrav... it's not confusable with mega.
