Stealth and Interceptors

Does a ship benefit for +1 stealth for hitting a ship if the opposing ship has intercepted the shots?

Example: an EA Thunderbolt does 2 hits on a Corvan thats at Stealth 4 but both shots are intercepted. Can an EA Omega claim a bonus to +1 stealth even if the hits are intercepted?

Even though the shots were intercepted I would say that your ship still successfully attacked the Stealth ship, so yes you would get the +1.

Yes. The +1 bonus comes from a ship already having 'seen' the ship. It doesn't matter whether the attack actually causes damage.

So what is the definition of a successful attack then. If you don't have to cause a hit, interceptors block hits, what is it. Just any attack roll that exceeds the hull? This would also apply to dodge as well?

Not disputing, looking for clarity.

This is another case of questionable wording. msprange has said that all that is necessary to "successfully attack" is to roll attack dice (though I cannot remember where :( It was somewhere in the discussions about emines and stealth...).

This means that it is possible to "successfully attack" without attacking successfully!

Success is dependent on what your goal is. If your goal is to destroy a ship, then you could argue that an attack is unsuccessful even if it causes masses of damage. On the flip side, if your goal is to just see the target, even an attack which does no damage can be successful.

Yep, I confirm that I remember it like that too. Rolling attack dice is sufficient to get the stealth bonus. You don't have to hit, and don't have to cause damage.

the way my group interpreted it was the roll for the stealth has to be successfull to allow an attack. if that roll is successfull everyone else gets the benefit.

Well, that works in most cases. But there are a few exceptions. For example, fighters that are close to the target do not need to make a stealth roll, yet their attacks do activate the bonus. Also e-mines do not make stealth rolls, but their attacks do activate the bonus. And it's possible to reduce stealth down to an automatic success (eg. stealth 3 ship is reduced by a scout and attacker is within 8"), so a stealth roll would not be necessary, but the bonus would still be activated.
