Starter ships

It really comes down to cost, that you can only scale upwards, as minimal transition risk starship requires a hundred tonnes of effected volume.

The sweetspot, if you can term it that, especially if you aren't in a hurry, is a monojump monogee two hundred tonner, which presumably could be run by Captain Jack O'Trades, all on his lonesome.

Cost after 10% volume discount 16.6455 MCr. Even less when used.
The nice thing is there is a lot of room to upgrade as you go.

Sorry, I don't see how it could be that cheap?

I get about MCr 20.7 in quantity:

Aha you’re right. That what I get for trying to type on an auto-correcting tablet.

Will have to revise... the goal was under 20MCr :)
-1 stateroom, -2 low, budget (size) pp. cargo now 33.
19.7055 after 10% common discount...will see what else I may tweak..

Funnily enough the concept seems to be obvious enough that we have all made roughly the same design.

I made this:

I managed to squeeze the cost just below MCr 20 (in quantity):

It is centered around a long narrow 70 Dt cargo hold, normally containing a 20 Dt demountable tank for jump fuel. The cargo hold is 7 squares wide and can accept standardised 10 Dt or 20 Dt containers, including for habitation.

It has a token single stateroom, that can be complemented with additional habitation containers in the cargo hold.

Three small 1 Dt modules can be used for a turret, better sensors, grapples, scoops, a loading belt, repair drones, or escape pods.

It can operate as a 100 Dt partially streamlined ship, or an unstreamlined 200 Dt vessel (J-1, M-1) with external pods/craft, cargo, and drop tanks.

Budget PP is iffy, you don't save much, but you do waste space:

Definitely. While there is the more power plant ‘power + size reduction’ combo (effectively you get more Power per ton for about the same cost) I was keeping it simple. And it’s one more thing to upgrade...if the PCs enjoy that sort of thing, do the job, get paid, keep flying. :)
