Starship Troopers Evolution

People think 5 pages of rules is too short? The shorter the rules, the better.

The greatest strategy game remains chess. The rules for that are mind numbingly simple. Yet people all over the world continue to play it. Why is that?

Good rules do not to be long and complicated.

I assure you, the rules are short and sweet - succint you might say. But they are also close to watertight in my opinion.

Truth here.

It's a fun game you can think about when not playing. SST is like that in a way. I'm going to bet even moreso when Evo is released and 99% of the confusion is gone, yes?

More people play "The Game of GO" than chess, btw. GO (Baduk, Wei'chi, etc) is even easier to play than chess but takes a lifetime to master. Oh, and I still haven't read about a computer that can beat a 9 Dan, unlike chess programs.

More questions for Matt

Will the cards that come in the boxes ever be published in S&P or even be available for download for those of us that might be using existing product lines?
Say for example you have a new player that want's to build and paint his stuff the old fashion way but the PPM crowd have an advantage in that they get all their stats in the box so don't need the existing ruelbooks.
Will the newbie be able to get hold of the cards via other means rather than have to fork out another fifteen quid for the old army book?

If the line is successful would we ever see the likes of PPM bug holes, skinny buildings or ammo dumps?

Will it ever be possible to order individual PPM models?
Say I buy a box of nine Ripplers but want ten without having to buy another box could I order the additional Rippler model seperately?

Given that army books are no-longer needed does this mean at some distant point in the future we will see new MI, Arachnid, Skinny and Forth models?
For example, say once the current line of MI models have been released would we see something like an LAMI Engineers squad or whatever and just get new rules in their box?

Will there be mixed sex MI squads or will it be a case of just guys?

How much variation will there be in the different poses included in each set? Are we just going to get say for a squad of eight troopers, a sergeant, special weapon trooper then the rest of the squad made up of two sculpts and how will different weapon options for work with the models?
Are we restricted to just say a Javelin for every CAP squad or will there be some way of allowing players to include other weapons like flamers or sniper rifles?

With the reliant gun platforms will the boxed set just include one of each gun type or is there some way that players can get say three twin .50s for example?

Are the bug models going to be identical or will there be some variation in positioning?

Will there be any form of advertising for the SST forum in the boxes of PMM? Some way of letting new players know of the existing community?

Will there be any additional support for the SSTE community in the form of official tournies, promotional material, mini previews, etc? Or will it just be left to run the way it is?

Will there ever be plastic markers released for the likes of tunneling markers, etc?

How radical a change will we see to the artillary rules? (always thought they could be a lot more streamlined myself).

Without sounding too harsh here but it is an important question, will the quality of the sculpts be improved? (I apologise for this question but I have to be honest here. It's bit discouraging when I can sculpt better minis than some of the existing range myself :( ).

Although the Slingshot would be insanely big if done in 28mm scale, will the actual model produced be custom designed for 28mm?
So for example will the cockpit, crew hatches and pilots be 28mm or can we expect to see a 15mm crew and scaled down model?
I expect a lot of people would be happy to see the Slingshot re-designed slightly if it mean it'd be closer to 28mm scale.
If this was the case would the other transports like the Viking get the same treatment? But I guess the Skyhook would be able to be scaled correctly. :)

As I understand it the Forth machines are able to field custom weapon loads. Does this mean that weapons will be seperate and will include every possible option allowed by the rules provided in each box?

As the army lists, whilst not being dropped altogether, will no longer see new editions does this mean that the new rulebook will include details of the Forth and what will happen if new factions are created?
Will they get background material published at some point?

Are we restricted to just say a Javelin for every CAP squad or will there be some way of allowing players to include other weapons like flamers or sniper rifles?
oh, that's a good idea-release the normal morita-armed troops in one box, and the guys with heavy weapons in the other. since there are 4 weapon options for the caps you'll have also 8 guys in box(2xeach)..unlikely, but handy

Umm...

So how will pre paint affect Caps plastic visors.

And most importantly Battlefield Evo- you do realise how much political crap you are about to wade into. Matt, please explain as this smacks of simplistic backround tweaking and a lack of knowledge of current affairs....

ok i'm starting to warm up to the idea.... kinda... i like the possibilitie of a wider audiance and better models, and this new painting technology intrigues me, so i'll buy it... but i won't like it. or i will. "its safe to say that the future can go either way"-basterdized quote from the president of the US

I sure hope they are clear version. That's one of my favourite elements in the CAP models.

Luckily most of the models that have those are already released so even if not I can just order the old models

We're going to run into no more political crap than any of the multitude of computer games out there at the moment...

It's best not to think things like that

Or any of the Tom clancey novels. It is fiction after all. Last time I checked 'Black Hawk down' or 'Schindlers list' did not get any crap.

Besides, it is about fun and models.

>>>All the stats for existing models will be in the main rulebook. New models will have stats for the original rules in SST (if they require new stats).

>>>If the line is successful would we ever see the likes of PPM bug holes, skinny buildings or ammo dumps?

I would say that is very possible. We have already started Project Uber Table. . .

>>>Will it ever be possible to order individual PPM models?
Say I buy a box of nine Ripplers but want ten without having to buy another box could I order the additional Rippler model seperately?

By special order, probably. We cannot see any reason why not at this stage.

>>>Given that army books are no-longer needed does this mean at some distant point in the future we will see new MI, Arachnid, Skinny and Forth models?

Yes - and this is one of the great things about the new format. New models do not mean we have to bring out a new army book. The game can therefore grow far more organically.

>>>Will there be mixed sex MI squads or will it be a case of just guys?

We are indeed looking at some female models.

>>>How much variation will there be in the different poses included in each set? Are we just going to get say for a squad of eight troopers, a sergeant, special weapon trooper then the rest of the squad made up of two sculpts and how will different weapon options for work with the models?

There is no fixed format here but, on average, you are looking at four separate sculpts per set - though they may well have different colours. Additionally, some models (like Warrior Bugs and Exosuits) will have moveable arms/legs.

>>>Are we restricted to just say a Javelin for every CAP squad or will there be some way of allowing players to include other weapons like flamers or sniper rifles?

The 'base' special weapon is the Triple Thud. But yes, provision has been made to add other weapons.

>>>With the reliant gun platforms will the boxed set just include one of each gun type or is there some way that players can get say three twin .50s for example?

We have not started work on these as of yet.

>>>Are the bug models going to be identical or will there be some variation in positioning?

See above :)

>>>Will there be any form of advertising for the SST forum in the boxes of PMM? Some way of letting new players know of the existing community?

Already written in!

>>>Will there be any additional support for the SSTE community in the form of official tournies, promotional material, mini previews, etc? Or will it just be left to run the way it is?

Yes - a ton of it. Stand by for news. . .

>>>Will there ever be plastic markers released for the likes of tunneling markers, etc?

I would be amazed if someone like GF9 did not do some.

>>>How radical a change will we see to the artillary rules? (always thought they could be a lot more streamlined myself).

Indeed. Everyone should now comprehend them with one glance, and they can now deviate sideways.

>>>Without sounding too harsh here but it is an important question, will the quality of the sculpts be improved? (I apologise for this question but I have to be honest here. It's bit discouraging when I can sculpt better minis than some of the existing range myself :( ).

Yes, this is one of the reasons we are doing SST Evo.

There will be some 'fiddling' on the scale of vehicles, but not that you would notice.

>>>As I understand it the Forth machines are able to field custom weapon loads. Does this mean that weapons will be seperate and will include every possible option allowed by the rules provided in each box?

Forth fighting machines never had access to every weapon in their arsenal anyway. However, there will be choices still.

Will they get background material published at some point?

Yes, yes and yes. We will also be running a preview on the Forth in S&P this year. . .

Well maybe so but I'd prefer more realism in a game. Also I dont currently know of any games in which there are suicide bombers et al.

"Black Hawk Down" doesnt get any stick because it does mention that US troops killed civilians- the film did get criticised because they cut that. Also thats history not future speculation. "Schindlers list" is from WW2.... . Fiction should still be reliable.

Really it comes down to reality and misinformation. There will never be a Middle Eastern League (though there is an Arab league). In reality we would never have a fair battleground (although the Americans are wildly ovverated at the moment anyway). And I'm uneasy in a game in which one faction are real life terrorists and another a bunch of repressive Communists. Aside from that I'm generally uncomfortable with many of those novels anyway as lacking all the proper backround. I dont like all my Middle Eastern chaps (Kurds, Persians and Arabs) lumped into one.

Doghouse got me thinking about one question that I had in the current rules, and I would like to request that if I'm correct about my definition I'd like to have that updated into the upcoming changes, Matthew. I've read quite a few history books and a .50 cal. gun in my recollection has not been called an "autocannon", but rather a "heavy machine gun". For comparison, a browning .30 cal. is a "light machine gun" while a 20MM is referred to correctly as a cannon. While a nit-pick (unless I've been wrong all these years), a 12.7MM .50 cal. weapon really should be called a heavy machine gun. Darn those Nits, anyway. Pesky things  .

The accepted wisdom in wargaming is to skirt around any war from Vietnam forwards.

However, I believe sensibilities are changing - you can see this in films and computer games (especially the latter). The projection forward of BF Evo also serves to distance it from real world events.

Finally, whenever we touch upon any force in the game, we always write it from the perspective of that force. Thus, the only 'evil' is found on the other side, your side is righteous and it is the other nations who are oppressive/materialistic/godless/imperialistic.

After that, it is up to the player to make up his own mind. But anyone projecting real world issues into a game probably has more than the game itself to worry about. . .
