Starship Design Handbook v1.0

Emperor Mongoose
Honestly, I'm too lazy to go through the entire forum looking for this, but since Matt had asked "What should Mongoose do next?", this would be nice. A book (even if it was just a pdf) that takes ALL of the rules and bits and pieces spread throughout the other books and consolidates and FIXES as many of the issues out there related to starship construction would be a GREAT addition everyone's Traveller library. Not to mention this idea has been tossed around again in a few recent threads regarding rules and conflicts with different books (and sometimes on different pages in the same book...)

We've seen a few intro's of new gear and concepts tossed out here and there, but a consolidated guide would also help out those who haven't bought all the additional books.

Plus this would be a good opportunity to finally address some issues plaguing Traveller since it's inception - like the rules being different for sub-2000 Dton ships vs. larger ones. Why can't a 500 ton ship use 3% of it's tonnage for maneuver drives like a 150,000 Dton cruiser? Things like that.

Comments? Insults? Chia pets anyone?

Would be a good idea. However, unless FIRST posted for complete review and correction, it will end up being a complete hash. Unless it goes through that process I would not purchase without being able to completely preview.

I think it's a very good idea. It should also include a section to rebalance a couple of the issues with space combat.

But definitely doable. The base rule structure is actually excellent, it's only in the implementation of some of the details, and the odd design feature that has got away from the fundamental premises and is not a major issue to rework.

If Mongoose could do a truly coherent spaceship build book, even by an open source process, it would be a wonderful asset and give a lot of players incentive to purchase and use the complete Mongoose rule set. It would lead to sales of their other products even if this one was done by an open review process, and then provided OGL, so people could patch up the holes in any existing designs which would not need to be much, a lot could be done just with computer software twists. If it was OGL then a library of ships would quickly follow which would lead to further use of related Mongoose products.

Definite good idea.

Perhaps clarifying/redoing things such as how often you can dodge, what the dodge applies to, can you dodge the same attacks and would that be limited by something (like dodge or skill?), what beams can be used as point defence, and many of the other questions floating around space-combat would be great.

What i've done in the interim is create a massive .PNG of screenshots/copy pasted from all the various books so that all my design options are in one, long, 20-page sized picture.

I made an index of the various design options:

Which I've found very useful. Thank you Andrew. (though I wish I could get access to the S&P magnetic harpoon text, heh)

That is awesome.

Do any of you gents know/remember where the webpage/resource is that has a listing of all the ships published under mongoose traveller?

I found out it once by mistake but no matter where I look now I cannot. Just like an index of where to find all mongoose Traveller published ships.
