star trek vanguard novels great source material

just getting back to trek gaming and I'm working on a fed fleet. The Vanguard novels have been a real inspiration. you folks might take a look if you haven't read them yet. I've been pondering a vanguard campaign. Klingons, tholians and shedai oh my. also if you do an image search for star trek vanguard there are some great renders out there

That series is the best of the "official" trek I have read. It almost seems, at times, like the author may have had some SFB experience. The only real departures were the Tholians using Plasma torpedoes, and the ability for single photons to destroy ships. Those are more in line with the "official verse". Nonetheless, they are great scenario fodder as well as good inspiration. I especially like the part where the Romulans are sitting in cloak just watching as everyone else fights. :)

The stuff may not be within the SFB license, but, like it was said, can make for good inspiration for actual SFB-based scenarios.

You've piqued my interest, Stormspear! I just downloaded a copy of the first ebook onto my Kindle to give it a read. 8)

stormspear, they are not within our license. :(

Any star fleet universe license fiction out there in novel or compilation form? Or would everything that's out there be stuff found mainly in captains log and fluff in the rulebooks?

There is a collection of short stories titled For the Glory of the Empire available in paper: http://store.starfleetstore.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=2201&Category_Code=19

and on e23: http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADB2201

There's also Away Team Log which in not in print yet, but is available as a PDF on e23: http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADB8010

and on DTRPG: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/118105/Away-Team-Log?manufacturers_id=3528

For the Glory of the Empire has to do with the Klingon invasion of the Federation. While the stories did appear in various CLs, they are now united.

Away Team Log is a collection of stories that focus on the people of the SFU. It should be of interest to RPGers, but it is a good collection of fiction and articles.

Theoretically a bleed through torpedo that lays 2 - 3 crits on a ship that all hit the same section could do it. Multiple Strikes to the Dilithium chamber would be a disaster.

Though, the odds of that are unlikely to say it mildly.

Oh, I know it's possible in ACTA. One overloaded photon that rolls a 6 to hit, then rolls 3 sixes out of its eight damage rolls, then lands all of them on the "3" line will destroy a ship. It's the shot every fed prays for. :)

They just make it so that almost every photon does that, much like you'd see in TNG or DS9. Then there's also the tractoring of one ship and throwing it into another one. Clever, but possible? The fight does take place in close proximity to a planet, so it's pretty short ranged.

I find the space combat portions of any TOS-era novels (to include the Vanguard series, which in all other respects I'd rate quite highly) to be the parts I sit least comfortably with. Probably because I'm too used to thinking in terms of how tactical warp combat works in the SFU, despite the two incarnations of the source material standing apart from one another.

I guess I'm too used to thinking in SFU terms at this point, even when it comes to looking at the Paramount/CBS Franchise.
