SST a few questions about "Last Stand"

Came up today in a game for the first time, so I have a few questions.
The set up makes you split your forced into two groups, with atleast 1/3 of your units in a group. Then you randomly determine which will be your starting units, and which shall be Reserves available starting on the 3rd turn.
1)Do units with drop capsules have to be put into one of the two groups?
Or do they come in as they normally do?

2)If you take "Probe" as your tactic, can you with hold half the units in the group you have to place? Or do you loose that because you get the Reserves?

Well, you're not the first to be confused by this, because I think we all are.

Based on the rules, there's not even really an implied right answer to either of these. I don't have the rulebook with me, but IIRC, the air rules state that they are merely always held in reserves, but the last stand rules say to split your force into two parts. Which rule takes precedence? Who knows?

As for probe tactics, it's the same thing. Can the half be half of your total, half of what is to be deployed or is the half already used up?

Just based on how we played it at a tournament, we said that...

1) Air units/Drop capsules do not count as part of the forces and come in normally

2) Probe/Attack tactics allow half of the units that are available to deploy to be kept off the table.

None of these are official, but, unless I missed a post from a while back, it's as close as we'll get until we see a new player's guide or a comment from Matt.

PLay it in the order the book dictates.
So split the force according to last stand during the priority level phase.
Now deploy your models (whichever portion you are allowed). If you are on attack orders you get to split these models in half as they are the only ones available.
Now remove any model that has to come on as an air unit....... regardless of the special rules, a capsule will be dropped and fighters will fly in.

so it's
Last stand: split your army.
probe/attack: split the part of your army that you have left.
flying models: must be deployed as air reserves.

So we choose which fraction of the army the air models are placed in. But regardless of where they end up, they are available in the air phase of the second turn.
