For my Traveller Space Western campaign I have decided to add a new characteristic, "Reputation (Rep)".
The Reputation (Rep) characteristic has 3 sub classes:
(Thanks goes to BP for this!)
Law Enforcer
Law Abider
Law Breaker
The player chooses 1 of the above reputation classes for his/her character. 90%+ of all citizens will fit into the Law Abider category.
Reputation tells how famous or infamous the character is by their actions.
For instance a Gunman (Law Breaker) with a high reputation could easily intimidate a simple farmer into backing down from a gunfight. A high Rep might also attract other gunmen who want to make a name for themselves. The reputation of a Law Breaker will also modify the bounty for his kill/capture if a warrant has been issued.
For instance a Marshal (Law Abider) with a high reputation will will be more likely to have common citizens join a posse, or to risk their own lives guarding the his/her back.
The characteristic will be on a 01-15 scale like other Traveller characteristics, but under certain circumstance could go over 15 or even down to 00 (-4).
Reputation is temporary, as people tend to forget a 'has-been'.
All characters start with a Reputation of 07.
Every 6 months the Reputation of a character will be reduced by 1 if over 7, and increased by 1 if under 7.
(Let me know if you think this should be changed to 1 year.)
------
Here is where I can use some help.
Here are some of the reputation modifiers I have worked out so far:
Reputation Modifiers:
Law Enforcer:
+R Capturing/Killing a wanted outlaw within the scope of a warrant.
+1 Capturing/Killing 3 outlaws with a 00 or less Rep modifier within the scope of a warrant.
-(R) Fugitive escapes while under custody (-1 if Rep is "00").
-4+R Backing down from a fair gunfight with a Law Breaker.
+1 Winning a gunfight with an armed Law Abider and not using your gun to shoot him.
+R+2 Winning a gunfight with an armed Law breaker and not using your gun to shoot him.
-1 Minor abuse of power if a lawman.
-2 Serious abuse of power if a lawman.
Law Abider:
+(R)+1 Capturing/Killing a wanted outlaw within the scope of a warrant.
-1 Backing down from a gunfight with another Law Abider.
+1 Winning a gunfight/fistfight for good intentions.
-2 Winning a gunfight/fistfight for bad intentions.
-1 Bad crop/cattle year.
+1 Good crop/cattle year.
Law Breaker:
+R+1 Killing a lawman in a fair gunfight. (Not necessarily a 'Law Enforcer') **
+1 Killing a lawman in an unfair gunfight. (Not necessarily a 'Law Enforcer') *
+R Killing another Law Breaker in a fair gunfight
-1 Backing down from a gunfight with a Law Enforcer.
-3+R Backing down from a fair gunfight with a Law Abider.
-1-R Getting your ass whupped in a fistfight by a lawman if his reputation if positive. ( (Not necessarily a 'Law Enforcer')
-1 Getting your ass whupped in any fistfight by a Law Enforcer or a Law Abider.
All:
-6 Shooting a woman in the back (if male). *
-4 Shooting a woman for any reason other than she drew on you first (if male). *
-2 Shooting an armed woman even if she drew on you first and not a Law Breaker (if male).
-1 Shooting an armed woman even if she drew on you first and she is a Law Breaker (if male).
-2 Hits and knocks out an unarmed woman without shooting her (if male).
-1 Hits and bruises an unarmed woman's face without shooting her (if male).
-3 Shooting a preacher or religious leader.
-2 Wearing body armor to an even matched gunfight.
-4 Shooting a man in the back. *
-3 Shooting a man that is not wearing a gun. *
-2 Shooting a man that refuses to fight or is not ready (and is wearing a gun). *
+1 Winning a gunfight where the opponent drew first.
+1 Winning 3 fist fights.
-2 Spouse runs away / leaves them.
+S+1 Gets married.
Notes:
R = The Rep modifier of the opponent. (Example: Rep-13 is a +2)
(R) = The absolute value of the Rep modifier.
S = The Soc modifier of the spouse.
Women on women use the same modifiers as men on men.
* = Hanging offences. A warrant will be issued for their arrest.
** = Sometimes a hanging offences. A warrant will usually be issued for their arrest.
Other modifiers to be left up to the referee, depending on the situation and circumstances.
------
Rep Below 00 (aka 'Rock bottom'):
Law Enforcers - Will usually be run out of town or off-world.
Law Abiders - Will usually give up and move to greener pastures, often off-world.
Law breakers - Have lost their nerve and will usually try a change of profession if they can.
At this point a PC or even an NPC may change their Reputation class.
A former gunman (Law Breaker) may become a temple preacher (Law Abider or Law Enforcer),
A lawman (Law Enforcer) may become an outlaw (Law Breaker), etc.
Their former reputation may still follow them for some years however.
Hence the former gunman turned preacher or doctor who still has people looking to kill him because of things he did or because of his former reputation.
Apply a -2 DM for all roles in their previous professions until they actually switch professions.
Afterwards they will still maintain their previous skill after a short term of practice or severe stress, but lack the confidence in that skill, having renounced their previous profession. Some other character may have to build up their confidence or a critical situation might need to take place before they flash into their former skill set.
------
Did I leave out anything major?
should the gravitational effect of Reputation be 6 months or 1 year?
Can you think of any other modifiers that I left out?
The people in this forum have been an immense help in creating the details of this world (Loneseda).
I would like to thank everyone for their contributions so far and in keeping their contributions on topic.
I LOOK FORWARD TO YOU COMMENTS!
