Emperor Mongoose
The Chinese program to launch a man to the moon suffered a major setback today as the Tianlong-3 booster system had a major catastrophe.
It appears that one of the booster stages prematurely lit off.

A few MURCA! types thought this was funny and this is my comment to them:

"Laugh all you want, folks. I got a couple of words for ya: Challenger and Columbia.
There is long list of astronauts and launch facility staff who died attempting to reach space, and the Russian/Soviet list is longer than ours [though not by much]. And that's not even getting into the no-casualty launch failures.
Outer Space has NEVER been easy or safe. The public might be blase' about it, but nobody actually involved in the process is."

Don't forget the Apollo command module fire on the ground.

As I recall, the last time the Chinese had difficulty launching rockets, the Clinton Administration was lobbied by American commercial interests to do the relevant technology transfers.

I suspect that the Russian, European, Japanese, and American rocket builders are about to get hacked.

Well, more than usual... the PRC's attacks on US info security have been constant since they built the Great Firewall.

I repeat, these are just the American ones.
The Russians have also lost many cosmonauts to disaster.

(Starliner is waiting in orbit until all the helium leaks out, so the astronauts won't sound squeaky during their trip home. Or something...)

It's only funny when no one gets hurt.

I can't say I'm a fan of the PRC. I grew up during the Cold War and 'Communist' means 'enemy' to me.
But some poor schmuck is going lose his life for this, after suffering the de riguer show trial, of course. For all I know, the MSS [China's very capable security service] already has the guy who captured this on his phone already in custody and that dude's body will probably end up where 'Tianamen Man's' corpse is.
And that's not even getting into all the expatriate Chinese whose extended families will be held hostage in exchange for espionage.

[Side note: Culturally, the extended familial clan is VERY important for Han Chinese. This includes relatives going back 4 or 5 generations. One 'hook' the Ministry of State Security uses is threatening the extended family of expatriate ethnic Chinese in sensitive positions... physicists, computer experts, government officials, even active duty military personnel. They're told that the PRC will arrest and 'reeducate' the ex-pat's cousins, entire families of them, if they don't supply the PRC with information.]

1. Friends and family.

2. The Chinese clan structure, such as it stereotypically is depicted, is a support structure in lieu of a lack of a governmental one, emotionally, defensively, and financially.

3. As I understand it, the sub Saharan one is somewhat more touchy feely.

4. The Chinese Communist Party, outside of their cadres, have done a lot to break that up, plus what are supposedly Chinese traditional cultural values.

5. So that form of extortion is harder to leverage, nowadays, and espionage wise, more of a way to contact the Thousand Talent via a third party, and ensure a secure communications and payment channel.

6. It's been minimalized to the nuclear family, and due to rather repressive political and financial pressures, even that is somewhat endangered.

7. What seems the main difference between the Russians and the Chinese, is that when the Chinese have had enough, they revolt.

8. And there's always, at least, a really big one every century, which has a good chance to overthrow the current dynasty, if not substantially weaken it.

9. And the Chinese have a very strong sense of injustice, since it seems that the majority tend to suffer under it, especially if there's no financial trade off to compensate for it.
