Space 1999

I think I will make the AI a virtual woman, what was the name of that shape changer in Space 1999? Her name was Maya. I think I will call the AI M.A.I.A or Maia more informally, the 'Y' gets replaced with an 'I', the letters stand for Machine Artificial Intelligence Assembly, but Maia doesn't like that, she much prefers to think of herself as a person rather than a thing. Much like the worm simulation I talked about Maia is a simulation of a woman, she is 16 years old, was born in 2033 and she lived her whole life on the Moon. The earliest structures of Moonbase Alpha were erected in the 2020s by the way. What does Maia look like?

How about this? Of course that is what the robot body she operates looks like, Her actual brain is a mainframe super computer in the moonbase, the robot can operate on the surface of the Moon without a spacesuit, it also has a radio transceiver so astronauts can hear voice in their suit radio when she talks to them in the vacuum of space, and she in turn can hear the voice radio replies. Maia has other robot bodies as well, including duplicates of this one and other more utilitarian models. One Eagle is equipped with a mainframe that she can transfer her consciousness too. A backup copy of her remains in the base computer when she's our doing reconnaissance in an Eagle.

Another possibility is this one.

Like this one too, but since they are robots, they could look like anyone. Since Maia gets to choose her looks, she can choose robot models as one chooses the clothes one wears.

Lets go half way, there is an alien artifact, that Maia interacts with, somehow she sets it off during her investigations, and it travels on a preprogrammed route a tour of the Cosmos. A warp drive is involved, that is suppressed by gravitational fields, but as it moves out of a gravitational well, the drive becomes more effective. Strictly speaking an FTL drive is not necessary, it could simply be a reactionless maneuver drive with inertial compensators for the entire Moon, but pushing close to the speed of light, the travel time for the Alphans would seem short to them, but would take years from the point of view of the rest of the Universe. The Alphans don't have control over the destination of the Moon, but it invariably passes close to the Mainworld in each system. When it comes within 100 diameters of each world, its path is that of any other natural object and easily predicted, generally lingers in a system for about two weeks or so before passing beyond the 100 diameter limit and activating its Warp drive once again. While at warp, the Alphas can chart the course of the Moon, and can tell which star it is heading towards. The actually drive is located near the nuclear waste dump, and is surrounded by deadly radiation which can't be approached by either man or machine. Maia is a bit mysterious. One of the reason's she is on the Moon, is that they don't want her getting on the Internet on Earth, she is supposedly firewalled onto the base, but she has been able to activate various systems that she supposedly shouldn't be able to activate. She rescued an astronaut one time after taking over his rover, something that the firewall supposedly should have prevented her from doing. One recent visitor was shocked when one of the Maia robots entered and airlock and decompressed without a spacesuit on and stepped outside in her bare feet. Maia has been kept under wraps from the general public, she is a classified state secret. Once the Moon is hurled from its orbit, it hardly matters anymore.

If you can get Taylor Swift to join your group, count me in for this one too (Just don't tell the wife).

I do like the idea though, it's a nice extra source of plot elements and a potentialy engaging story arc for the development of the MAIA character.

The problem with that is, if the moon zips past every planet at near lightspeed, they'll only be nearby for a few minutes. There would be no way for an eagle to decelerate from lightspeed, explore the planet, and then accelerate back up near lightspeed even faster than the moon to catch back up with it.

Yeah, there is always that sticking point.
Hmm, there is this setting which the Moon could fly through. Why not have the Moon jump ahead in time as well as space to make it interesting:

If you ramp up the speed enough, extreme time dilation could account for going forward in time, otherwise play about with the concept of toroidal black holes (not the ordinary ones; doughnut shaped!), apparently time should behave very strangely near one, especially if you change direction whilst going through the hole in the middle!

Here is a small snippet of RDD Nickel's timeline regarding Alpha Centauri. I was thinking of making Earth's Moon Phaethon's fourth Moon.

The Phaethon Calendar begins on April 22nd, 2136 A.D. (Afteryule 1st, 1 P.R.)
1 PR, 2136 AD
Tuesday, Maymonth 15th (Tuesday, December 25th on Earth):
The Helios arrives at Phaethon and the crew makes their landing on the northern tip of Middle Paulatia building a colony there which they name Fort Hurley (named after Cpt. Frank Hurley, the first man to step foot on the planet).
Nuclear Holocaust having occured on Earth while their ship was en route, the colonists are stranded without any hope of further settlement or supplies.

11 PR, 2156 AD
The Mutiny
Dissenting groups within the colony come to arms with eachother. The colonial homebase is destroyed and access is cut off from the mothership. colonists soon descend into a barbaric state.

The Barbaric Age
11-562 PR
2156-3211 AD

For centuries while Earth lies in post-apocalyptic ruin, Phaethon stands as the only other planet inhabited by Mankind. It’s populace, descendants of the crew of the starship Helios, live as wandering nomads with scant memory of their terrestrial origins.

563 PR, 3211 AD
Afterlithe 1st (Easter Sunday, April 24th on Earth):
The Cygnus arrives, landing on the plains of Togarmi, and bringing the first people from Earth in over a thousand Terran years. It is greeted by nomads on horseback.

The Moon doesn't have to travel in a straight line to get to Alpha Centauri. The distance between the Earth and Phaethon is 4.3 light years, but the Moon doesn't have to get there by direct route. Look at the timeline in the previous post. I was thinking of having the Moon arrive during the barbarous years between 2156-3211 AD according to the timeline. The Moon parks itself in such an orbit that it keeps the lunar cycle that it had on Earth. (The Moon is purposefully driven by something with some agenda of its own, unknown to the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha) now of the Moon arrives, say shortly before the arrival of the second colony ship Cygnus, say between 3111 AD and 3211 AD, they may alter the future timeline of this planet from that outlined in my previous post, after about 1000 years after the colony ship arrived, the initial population has spread all across the planet, with the tech level similar to the Middle Ages in many respects. If the Moon arrives after Cygnus, then the Alphans may get involved between the conquerers and the "Native Inhabitants" who's ancestors arrived 1000 years prior to that. One colony ship, vs the Moon with 300 Alphan Inhabitants, I wonder how that would turn out.

I think humans are nomadic because of Phaethon's extreme seasons, with an axial tilt of 32 degrees, the year is almost twice as long as Earth's. Maybe humans find it easier to migrate than to adapt to the extreme seasons, the planet is also on the heavy side gravitationally, so expect the human inhabitants to be short and well muscled.

As you can see, the Moon does get fairly close to Aetheria, if left to orbit after a while. The centers of each moon come to about 25,000 miles of each other, tidal forces between them will be significant when that happens.

To give more realism, what if the transferrence of the Moon was a one time event?
The Alpha Centauri as outlined above seems fairly busy, the inhabitants of Phaethon could serve as replacements for crew casualties, they just need training. The Cygnus Colony ship could act as rivals to the Moonbase Alpha Crew. the Post Apocalyptic civilizations on Earth may seem just a bit tyrannical to the Moonbase crew, say something like modern conquistadors. the Cygnus Colony ship is tech level 8, they have no FT drive, instead they placed their crew in low berth capsules, with the usual chance of fatalities, but the government that sent them considers the crew expendable. The Atlantan Confederacy sent the ship Cygnus, the first thing they notice about the ship is a Confederate Flag displayed on the ship's hull with too many stars on its "X". The Atlantan crew speak a dialect of English that is very hard for the Alphans to understand. The Atlantans generally have a darker complexion, similar to American Indians, the Phaethonians tend to have lighter skin, their planet is in the midst of an Ice Age, as you can see by the map, the planet also gets a little less light per unit area than the Earth, but more than Mars, hence it has a year that is nearly twice as long as Earth's, the carbon dioxide content of Phaethon's atmosphere is higher than Earth's, makes up somewhat for it being further from the star, but the planet is still colder and drier than Earth, the region around the equator, what would be the tropics on Earth has more or a temperate climate and it has seasons, in the tropic zones, since the planet has a tilt in excess of 30 degrees, the warmest periods in the equatorial regions is Spring and Fall, because that's when the sun is directly overhead, during winter summer the equatoral regions grow cooler, and since the Earth life that seeded this planet is used to a 365 day year, not one that is 720 days long, it tends to thrive around the equator, while more primitive native life is better adapted closer to the poles. The Atlantans with darker skin, seem to have an attitude towards the lighter skinned Phaethans similiar to that Southerners held towards black people before the Civil War, in other words they try to exploit the heck out of them! The Atlantans also have a male dominated society where women are subordinate, and this tends to offend many of the Alphans sensibilities. Women are brought over by the Atlantans chiefly as homemakers and childrearers, and have a 19th century attitude about many things, though technologically the are roughly on par with the Moonbase Alpha crew, their values are not 21st century values.

How is that for setting up conflict?
