Sorcerer's Sanctums

Vortigern

Banded Mongoose
I'm looking for some insight/inspiration into how a typically paranoid and defensive sorcerer might lay out defenses for their permanent abode under this system.

The majority of magic & effects etc. seem to be rather transient in nature, and meant to be that way. Permanent magic and non-sorcerous means of implementing defenses seem to be hideously expensive...

So how does one outfit a sorcerer's abode to be an actual 'safe-haven' for the fellow without spending a fortune and having to be monstrously powerful (permanent magic) already?

Read REH and Pastiche.
The classic defenses were mechanical (trap doors/ falling masonry), chemical (lotus poisons and such in an enclosed area), and/or creature oriented (Giant spiders in the treasure chambers or mute lions in the courtyard).
You are right it is prohibitively expensive to set up permanent magic for defense for most sorcerors. Cunning traps and creatures are much easier, cheaper, and as effective.

Abominations go crazy, but they're a great trap if you put them in a room that's completely locked. You know better than to go in, but an adventurer won't.

So even after you lose control of your construct, werewolf, or other thing, it can still serve a purpose.
