Soo.... Airlock freebies

Ah, The HG Shuttle on p 154 has the airlock listed, yet the same ship in the CB2024 p 226 , removes the airlock, and the airfins and fuel scoop for some reason, but the cargo seems to account for it.

So say a Scout Courier at 100 tons. The rules say it MUST have an airlock, and every 100 tons of ship has a no-cost airlock, but it doesn't say a non-tonnage airlock. So are we now losing 2 tons, but no additional credits, for that 1 required airlock?
This implies you MUST have an airlock on a ship. So even a non-starship of 100 tons is required to have one, but a 95 ton small craft is not.
My 500 dton spy ship can have 5 airlocks as part of its hull cost, but it is only REQUIRED to have one. That's what it means.

The "free" airlocks come out of the same tonnage that accounts for your corridors and things. Which is why staterooms are not as large as their tonnage suggests.

A lot of this stuff is legacy.

Smallcraft are on their own in regard to freebie airlocks; they need interior access from the exterior, and you have a free hand with that.

Hundred tonne plus spacecraft get a free airlock per.

It's canon, if not physics.

My take is:
  1. At least one airlock per 500dT is recommended (except for small craft that have a cockpit and no passenger accommodation)
  2. Per 100dT of hull volume you get 1 airlock at a zero credit cost
  3. All airlocks take up hull volume, even the ones with zero credit cost

Just checked my HG2022. Small craft list airlocks and pay for them. Xpress Boat, Scout Seekers, Far Trader and Free Trader do not, but they show up on the deck plans. Empress Marava shows 2 cargo airlocks which they pay for and they show up on the deck plans but not a standard airlock.

Pay for from credit, or pay for from tonnage, or both? I think the deck plans are a bit of a red herring, because they are something of an artist's impression!

Doesn't sound discretionary. "A ship has at least one airlock per 500 tons." Not might have. Does have.

Since I had to look up the Big Mac Index recently, pure statistics can be deceptive, and need to be regarded in view of their local environment.

Also, there are more options on the menu.
