Solomani Confederation in the Hard Times/New Era?

SJE

Banded Mongoose
Did the Solomani Confederation suffer a 'Short Dusk'/ Long Night during the collapse of the 3rd Imperium? (1120-1200ish)

Or did it stay as a functioning, mutually supporting government during the period the Imperium fell apart?

Thx

Steve

If you can still find them, the Traveller Chronicle magazines #10; Children of Earth Vol. 1 and #11; Children of Earth Vol. 2 covers the Solomani area in the TNE setting.

While it is a wonderful set of articles produced by Mr Hale, the 1248 setting went a different direction...

I tend to avoid this timeline, but as I understand it, the Solomani do take advantage of the confusion and expand their borders spinward, recovering surprisingly less territory than I would have thought.

Than everything starts to fall apart due to an internal coup, which may be ideologically based to dismantle the current authoritatively inclined regime.

At roughly which year does Confederation governments start pulling back from the borders?

Thx

In the official OTU

Once Solomani catch wind of the Rebellion and the Imperial fleets start going to Lucan and the other rimward contenders to the throne, the Solomani retake Terra and start chewing up territory. Not as much as you would think as the Vegans put up incredible resistance and the Asalan are spinward. This is shown in the various maps of the various Megatraveller products.
The two pdfs that further entail what happens
1248 Sourcebook 1: Out of the Darkness
Traveller 1248 SOURCEBOOK 4: THE FREEDOM LEAGUE
are available in the TNE CD ROM Set 2 on the FFE Website. I purchased mine long ago when they were available individually.

Basically,
HARD TIMES
The Solomani did not suffer from Hard Times (1128-1130) at all, not in the way that book is written. War areas sure, but the Confederation as a whole was intact. It is written in the 1248 books that Margaret's side of things was still losing to Solomani advances up until Virus hit. Duke Craig and Daibei had made peace. With that and Lucan pulling fleets out of Diaspora and the Old Expanses, well she was next. A peace treaty is signed, effective 001-1130. The Aslan START having a go of things starting in 1125. Aecessionist movements became more vocal tying up war efforts in the Shattered Imperium and the Aslan. The Confederation just started having skirmishes with the Hiver in Neworld Sector.

VIRUS (1130-1200)
Virus hit the Confederation and is relatively shielded from standard destruction due to Solomani paranoia with regards to computer security. The secessionists movements along with Virus cause the Confederation to split into the moderate Terran Federation and the old jackbooted Confederation. So moderate that the Vegans made peace AND gave them support just before they went under from Virus.

The remainder of the Solomani Confederation is destroyed in 1138 when the "Supermen" took Home, other key worlds, and effectively decapitated the Party leadership. The Supermen were genetically engineered humans who were designed to be superior physically and mentally to standard Solomani Humans. Holdovers from GenAssist and the Gene Wars mentioned in the old DGP books. By 1150, Solomani space is just like everywhere else (except the Regency and the Hive Federation).

Terra becomes a pocket empire of down to 3 worlds,
The Solomani Imperium forms in he Trailing Edge of Neworld Sector run by those who are hardliners even by Party standards and retain an empire of 50 worlds (marginally), but gets whomped on by Virus again in the 1160s.
Home is run by the Supermen, or others depending on the year..

THE NEW ERA (1200-1248)
The Solomani Imperium recovers from the 1160s and reaches critical mass in Neworld Sector, to become a pocket empire on its own. It expands, sending ships to Terra and Home demanding they submit and join the Rule of Man as they call themselves. The (new) Terran Confederation refuses starting new conflicts. Home refuses, but is too far away.

In the 1248 books it is revealed that THE REASON Hivers created pocket empires like the Reformation Coalition is to slow down the Rule of Man. By having the RoM absorb too many worlds too quickly, they calculate and hope it will collapse under its own weight. Nicer states more amenable to the Hivers will remain, but this will take decades. Propoganda by Hiver traders turn the perception of RoM from entrenched military state to "ravening monsters". Individual RoM warships continually disappear, not due to Virus as much as Hiver warships. By 1248 it has taken over about 16 subsectors, 14 in Neworld sector, 2 in Aldeberan.

The Terran Confederation is on good terms with the Freedom League (formerly the Reformation Coalition) and the United Worlds in Diaspora Sector. The TC is doing slow and steady expansion like the RC did. They govern about 9 subsectors by 1248 centered on Terra. The Vegans are a willing part of the Confederation. It is not stated how supremecist the TC is other than it is far more moderate than the old Confederation was.

Both groups understood the threat of The Gods of Thunder represented and sent all the the ships they could to fight at both Battles of Gateway Station.
