So an idea on a campaign heading

Hopeless

Mongoose
Looking at running a game set around the first manned mission to Mars.

The idea is that a moon base is being established and the international space station is being replaced by a much larger version set in a Lagrange point but this will take decades before its ready.

Meanwhile the moon base has barely been started and I was left wondering just how many ways this could be expanded...

1) The technology being used is stolen by other nations who seeking to aspire to become the next world power begin a development that initially isn't seen as the start of a new war but doesn't bode well for global unity,

2)Something else is messing around with humanity and I'm looking at you Gundam 00!

3)Someone has been messing with time travel and altered the past in an attempt to prevent humanity spreading beyond the solar system, however just as they have foes they have a Kyle Reece mixing it up!

4) What other ways can I make this game more interesting I have been looking at Space 1999 and UFO but don't see aliens being that interested in illegal organ gathering as a reason for getting involved but there can be other reasons after all what exactly caused Mars extinction?
Doesn't necessarily have to be a natural event after all that Nibilu or whatever its called can have another variation and yes I am a fan of Doctor Who and no it doesn't have to be called Mondas instead... oh I wonder if Tellos is available... hmm Skaro...

How about humans have a few shake and bake science outposts set up on Mars, that are little more than a few special landers all linked togetherinwhich to study Mars Geology. Maybe the crew to each of these outposts is maybe 4-5 each and maybe there are three of them on planet, with a orbital station in orbit of Mars as well too.

Then from out of space comes a group of large craft that make controlled landings on the planet and begin opperations and spitting out atmosphere of a sort. Maybe it is Methane based. These landers are huge, almost city sized and working fast. In a couple of months they have changed enough of the atmosphere that it is becoming a slightly less than standard Methan based atmosphere. Mybe as these city ships continue, then smaller craft are then launched and begin to seed the planet with spores and alien plant life begins to take root.

All attempts to make contact with the Aliens have been ignored. The humans have even travelled to one of these city ships, and have not been able to gain any access inside of it. A more properly skilled and equiped team needs to be sent to invistagate these (30) city atmosphere processing plants ships.

Meanwhile the planet's temperature has warmed up because of the thicker atmosphere, and there seems to be 3-4 types of plants that are growing on the surface. Also there apears to be water in shallow pools in areas and water in the clouds that has brought about rain fall on the serface of Mars. It appears that this Alien race is seeding the planet Mars and terraforming it into a worl of their own design which is not set for human life.

So whom are these Aliens? Are they friendly? Can humans co-exist with them? Do theye even know or care that humans are there and know of them at all? Do they come in peace?

Nice idea not the way i was thinking but hopefully someone else who reads this thread will take up that option.

Still thinking that the events would lead eventually to a moon base and gradual build up to a manned Mars mission but something comes up that makes things alot more uncertain.

I'm going to go over some stuff first but I'm thinking along the lines that there's another species operating somewhere in the outer planets and whilst their actions haven't been much worse than some of the claims of alien visitation there is something more to whats going on.

Been wondering about an old science fiction series where it details humanity having started on Mars until it was rendered uninhabitable with some of the survivors reaching earth and eventually forgeting their past and others went further out there and its now we're beginning to discover proof of their presence.

But still need to work on the how, why and other stuff.

Still looking at a mixture of Space 1999 and UFO for the most part.

Actually a Moonbase is counterproductive. It's easier to get to Demios from LEO(Low Earth Orbit) than it is from a Moonbase due to the Moon's gravity well.

Check out a board game called "High Frontier." It is designed by Phil Eklund, a NASA Rocket Scientist who spent 20+ years working and studying it and along the way was developing the game as an educational tool.
