Sniper damage allocation

When does the sniper's hit officially occur in order of damage allocation?

Line up the dice rolls in order of highest to lowest. Work your way down till you hit the sniper die and then you declare which of the targets left you want to hit?

Or

Do you have to declare your target first and then roll the sniper before the other dice are resolved?

It may not come up very often but there are smart ways to allocate the sniper damage to gain extra hits from lower results on other dice.

5 targets in order from nearest:
6+
4+
5+
4+
6+

Damage roll results:
Kornet 9
SVU 7
Rifle 4
Rifle 3
Rifle 3
Rifle 2

Chosing to hit the 5+ lets the next 1st rifleman hit.

roll your dice, apply the sniper shots where you like the the fedyeen, then apply other dice in the normal fashion cording to the rules.

I'd go with that, the rules say allocate to any model, allocation happens after you roll them.

the rules state you have to roll all damage dice from a fire action together - the best thing to do is to roll a different coloured D6 for the sniper rifle. If the sniper rifle is not readied you allocate as normal - highest roll (after bonus) applied to the nearest target, working backwards

when readied you still roll all the dice together, but you decide what model the dice is allocated to when assigning damage dice - the important thing is that all damage dice are allocated simultaneously.

I definitely use different colored dice for the specialty stuff. This avoids someone saying the 2 they rolled is now a 4 due to the +2 for being readied, etc.

I do this for MGs, AOEs, and now Snipers. I began this procedure with "readied" MGs so I knew which dice are tossed out of the "Double-Suppression" ability for rolling 1s. Sometimes MGs jam or misfire too. :wink:

With more and more "Specialty" models in units, it is starting to make me wonder if MGP has stock in Chessex dice though... :lol:

we have a standard

normal weapon = White dice
GLs = red dice
MINIMIs = black dice
snipers = blue dice.

keeps it simple and fluid.

This isn't a super-official answer, since I don't have a rules sheet handy so I'm doing it from memory...

Step-by-Step Guide To Allocating Special Damage Dice
This applies to specially targeting anti-tank weapons, sniper weapons, and so on, since the key phrase on the card should always be "[apply damage where you like]...instead of allocating normally" or some such.

1. Declare Shoot action. Pick out any special targets, such as for CKEMs, sniper rifles, and so on.

2. Specify which dice are for which weapon, and roll.

3. Remove any ones.

4. Allocate the 'pre-allocated' dice first. That is, put the CKEM next to the tank, the sniper dice next to the sniped models, et cetera.

5. Allocate the rest of the dice, from highest to lowest, to any models that do not already have a damage die, from the closest part of the fire zone backwards. Any surplus are applied wherever you like.

6. Sort out explosions, deaths, armour saves and wotnot.

Reasoning: the normal rules for allocating dice say that you allocate one die to every model in the fire zone, then the rest as you see fit. Pre-allocated dice are still allocated dice - you just know where they're going ahead of time.

^ Keeps a group of models with sniper rifles from deciding after the dice are rolled from picking targets. Hence you had to sniper rifles in a unit that is firing and you have two different targets that are command models. You decided to fire one at the USMC sgt. the other at a Cpl. You roll your dice and only one hit, so you put it on the Sgt. That would be cheezy. This way you would have to pick before the dice are rolled and the Cpl. would have gotten it, and the Sgt. would still be leading the squad. Makes Sense.

Agreed. That's what I was hoping for.

Which is why I don't think it's right. Allocation is done after the dice are rolled. Changing how dice are allocated doesn't mean that you change the timing. Possibly unfortunate in this case, but that's how I'm reading the rules so far.
