slaine house rules;clan tartans

I was wondering if you made those up TootHill Man or if there is a authenticity to area related tarten colours.

Looking at the picture above I have always wondered if his pants were painted the wrong colours or if these colours too have some speical meaning. Personnally I thought the cream and dark brown stripe a bad choice in terms colour co-ordination and what I thought might be Slaine's personal tastes in clothing.

Usaulley he's wearing red with black stripes. As seen here.

Of course, they still might be the same tartens after he's been wading waist deep in blood.

Just out of curiosity, I typed the words Tarten colours for MacRoth. ( Slaine's last name.)

I found this page.................

http://www.fhaoil-choin.org/druidcolor.htm

I thought it may be of interest.

Not that I'm demanding that this much realism should be
paid attention to as it's mostly make beleive anyway. As this is one of the more mundane aspects of the comic/game. It would be interesting to find out if Slaine has been drawn/painted with the correct colours.

Incidently, I recall TootHill Man, saying that the High Kings personal tarten is a combination of the three primary colours combined. Which sounds fair enough.

It also says in this paragragh that they use seven colours which no-one else but the High King has a right to.

Regarding the suggestion I made before that Slaine could very well bewearing that light cream coloured tarten with dark brown stripes, but stained read from blood in battle. I personally like that idea.

As I have now read on the above page that only royalty have the colour of scarlett/red on thier own tartens.

This might also explain the reason for going into battle, Skyclad. It was noted by myself that Slaine ( Before he was King.) often went into battle Skyclad with the other Red Branchers. Unless they are considered royalty, my hypothesesis won't make much sence.

For Royalty, thsi was more of a option than a rule.

But the reason for them being skyclad was due to the fact that it may have been forbidden for them to have blood spilt on their own tarten clothing after wading neck deep in blood as Slaine might boast. As blood stains are notoriously hard and next to impossible to get out of clothing after it dries.

The High King might take offence at seeing the common rabble wearing red stained tartens only reserved for royalty.

So, off with the clothes while preparing for battle.

Red is the forbidden colour.

So skyclad it was. Although they may have gone this way becuase it was another way of offending the overdressed Romans and that their clothing may be ruined by fighting and being warped. ( Not having a Hero Harness.)

A good seamtstress/tailor that doesn't charge a high fee for their services, perhaps was harder to find in the Land of the young.

My appologies if somebody for official reasons knows otherwise and just remember this isn't official, I only made this up.

as I was still wondering about the about cream or off white with dark brown striped tartan that the Slaine action is seen to be wearing in the above pictue.

I decided to look up 'Tartan' on the Wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartan

In the first paragraph ( Under the heading of Origins.) a Tartan of similer colour and design is described. Described as 'FalKirk Sett'.

What ever that means......

Not that I would want to bogdown the Slaine fantacy setting with too much FACT. Though what is factual and what isn't is still interesting to know.

well done 8) but remember still too this day the royal famliy may wear certain tartans which it is still technically a death sentance for a non royal to wear tartans and the clan loyaltys are strong even today

I wonder when at what stage did Celts or was it just the Scottish Clans people started wearing Kilts instead of Pants.

Which came first Kilts or the Pants?

According to some sites on the web and as far as I can remember
Kilts came first (worldwide), then pants (earlier than I thought). The highlanders kept the kilt and because of "back-to-nature" romanticism during the 19th century the lowlands of Scotland also adopted it.
Some info on wikipedia but I've read similar on several sites.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_kilt

remember pictures of egyptians in linen kilts and aztecs too so it was the thing to wear but why it was populur in a land of thistles/midges I have no idea

Hey all you need to know is Kilts Rule and that is it! :D

I like these tartan "rules" Tooth had come up with long ago. And used them in my own Slaine D20 games. Now however they will get use in Slaine RuneQuest! I cannot wait to get my hands on this book!

it is good and best of all mongoose have solved the warped cover issues but for slaine having a warped cover seems in keeping  8)

I have only ever seen Slaine wearing the Kilt once.

Personnally I thought Tarten pants were a improvement.

A better accesory...

Though, if the pants came second, that would make Slaine a very modern Celt.
