The advantage though does stop weapon systems, even getting at you... and (lack of book here so memory may be off) but doesn't it also stop anti fighter? when you add that the extra damage from a crashing nail really helps to drop a ship out....
It's is a bit of a pain, but has it's advantages in the right situation.

Having done some rolling, I wouldn't try to skindance as an alternative to ramming. The lack of the SAP and TD traits for the AD from the failed skindance means you do too little damage...
